Unified MMA 11 – Recap

Unified MMA put forth an incredible night of fights for a sold out crowd at The Mirage Banquet Hall in Edmonton, Alberta tonight which included the crowning of Canada’s first ever Flyweight Champion. Also on the card were a pair of hard fought and very entertaining amateur bouts.

Corey Lauticher vs. Mike Davis
Round 1: The two Flyweights trade leg kicks before Lautischer lands a combo and Davis responds with some shots of his own. They tie up against the cage and Lautischer lands knees before referee Vern Gorman pauses the action to warn Lautischer for grabbing the cage. They restart and both men trade shots. Corey lands one to the body and Davis responds with a nice combo before pressing him into the cage. Davis lands knees and Lautischer reverses and looks for a single leg and Davis defends and looks for a guillotine. Lautischer lands knees to the thigh and Davis pulls guard and ends up on top in a scramble. Davis lands punches to the body before moving to side control. Lautischer is able to replace half guard but Davis peppers him with big lefts. Lautischer looks for a guillotine but Davis pulls his head out and lands more solid shots and one big elbow prior to the end of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Davis

Round 2: Lautischer opens the second with a leg kick and Davis takes the opportunity to secure a takedown to full guard where he lands some punches. Davis stands up out of the guard but eats an upkick and drops back down and works the body with punches. Davis continues to pepper the body and throws in an occasional head strike. Lautischer looks for a guillotine choke but Davis is able to escape and lands some short shots. Davis again stands up and clears the legs before getting back down into half guard and lands some shots. Davis stands again and drops a few more punches as the round comes to a close. Round 3: Lautischer again opens with a leg kick but this time gets dropped by a big right. Davis ends up in guard before passing to side control. Lautischer gives his back before Davis finally settles in side control. Neither man can get anything going until Davis secures full mount and then Lautischer gives him his back again. Davis lands some big hammerfists and more punches. Davis begins to work for the rear naked choke and Lautischer is able to defend briefly but ultimately Lautischer is forced to tap giving Davis the victory and the spoils as he captures the inaugural Flyweight Championship.

Merrick Duggan vs. Troy Sorensen
Duggan shakes off the glove touch and gets right down to business, chasing Sorensen down with punches although nothing lands with much power. Duggan secures a takedown and Sorensen holds on tight. They battle for position and Sorensen is able to get back to his feet only to be dragged back down where Duggan lands some shots. Sorensen tries to control the wrist but Duggan frees his arms and unleashes more heavy shots followed by a big knee to the body. Duggan moves to north/south and rains down another flurry of hard punches that force referee John Braak to step in and call a halt to the bout.

Josh Dugas vs. Nick Campbell
Round 1: Dugas lands a kick to the body and Campbell responds with a shot. Dugas looks for a takedown against the cage but can’t complete it and they tie up. Dugas lands a short elbow before hip tossing Campbell to the mat. Dugas lands in half guard and Campbell looks to get back to his feet but eats a knee on the way up. Campbell picks him up and looks for a slam but Dugas is able to minimize the impact. Dugas winds up on top and lands shots. Dugas gets back to his feet and they tie up against the cage. Dugas looks for a takedown but Campbell defends and lands shots. Dugas breaks away and lands a combo before looking for a single. Campbell looks for a guillotine and pulls guard but can’t lock it in. Round 2: Both men trade shots before Campbell shoots in for a takedown and finally gets Dugas down into full guard. Dugas looks for an armbar from the bottom but Campbell is able to free himself and stands up. Campbell kicks the legs and eventually drops back down into full guard. Dugas looks for a triangle but can’t lock it in and lets go. Campbell passes to half guard but can’t mount any offence and referee Vern Gorman stands them up. Dugas lands a leg kick and they tie up where Campbell lands a pair of elbows in the final seconds of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Dugas

Round 3: They trade shots and Dugas lands a takedown to full guard where he lands punches to the body. Dugas lands a big knee and ducks under a combo before kicking the leg out and lands a solid shot. Campbell turns his back and Dugas jumps on the back but they end up tying up against the cage and Campbell lands shots. Campbell gets him to the ground and lands shots before passing to side control. Campbell continues landing shots and passes to full mount. Dugas is finally able to get back to his feet in the final ten seconds and makes a valiant effort to finish the fight with a quick flurry of punches and kicks but Campbell is able to survive and the round ends. Mark Drummond vs. Spencer Jebb
Round 1: Drummond lands a high kick followed by a leg kick and Jebb looks for a single. Drummond rolls through and lands in side control and lands elbows. Jebb tries to bridge out but Drummond holds him down and lands the occasional elbow before passing to side control. Drummond continues to land short elbows and knees to the body. Jebb is finally able to get back to his feet and they trade shots against the cage until the round ends. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Drummond

Round 2: They trade jabs and Drummond lands a pair of solid kicks to the body. Drummond ducks under a combo and looks for a takedown but gets caught in a guillotine. Drummond is able to pull his head free and lands knees against the cage. Drummond connects with some leg kicks followed by Jebb responds with a combo before they tie up against the cage. Jebb knees the legs and lands foot stomps before referee John Braak separates them and they restart. Drummond lands a high kick, leg kick combo and Jebb responds with a nice 5 punch combo against the cage. Drummond weathers the storm but Jebb lands another combo and looks for a double. Drummond defends but Jebb backs up and lands a kick to the body. Drummond lands a head kick and a big double leg as the round comes to an end. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Jebb

Round 3: Drummond lands a big leg kick and they trade shots before tying up against the cage. Drummond lands knees to the thigh and secures a double leg to half guard. Drummond lands shots and short elbows before a lull in the action. Drummond lands the occasional punch and short elbow before letting the punches and hammer fists fly, forcing Braak to step in and stop the fight.

Neal Anderson vs. Jevon Marshall
Anderson immediately clinches and lands several powerful knees before they tie up against the cage. They battle for position before Anderson is able to secure the clinch again and drops him with another solid knee. Anderson pounces and lands a few shots and referee Vern Gorman looks ready to step in but Marshall shows signs of life but it’s only a matter of time and Anderson continues to pound away until Gorman has no choice but to step in.

Ryan Rother vs. Leo Constant
Constant rushes in and gets caught with a combo but Rother backs away and gets dropped with a right. Constant steps back and lets Rother to his feet and the two trade hard punches for a solid 30 seconds before Constant drops him again. Constant again fails to capitalize and lets him back up. They again trade huge bombs and Rother gets a takedown ending up in side control where he drops big elbows and hammer fists. Constant replaces his guard but Rother continues to land shots causing Constant to cover up. Rother continues to rain down punches until referee John Braak steps in.

Brandon Hammond vs. Jeff Larkin
Hammond opens with a combo that drops Larkin against the cage. Hammond looks for a guillotine but Larkin only to get caught in an armbar. Larkin pulls out and winds up in guard where he lands shots followed by a solid elbow. They get back to their feet and and they separate with Hammond connecting. Larkin responds with some shots of his own and Hammond lands a kick to the body. They both trade shots and with Larkin getting the better of the exchanges. Hammond shoots for a takedown and Larkin defends. Hammond lands a leg kick and chases Larkin, looking to land punches however Larkin is the one landing counter punches as he back pedals. Hammond again chases him down and eats more punches from a retreating Larkin. They tie up against the cage and Larkin connects with the dirty boxing. Hammond looks for a takedown but eats shots as the round ends. Between rounds Hammond indicates to his corner that he is unable to see out of his right eye and his corner waves the fight off. Rocky Biggs vs. Jarid Howse
Howse connects with a shot before Biggs muscles him to the ground and unleashes numerous humongous punches that force referee John Braak to step in and rescue Howse from any further punishment.

Robb Buzzeo vs. Neil Doty
Buzzeo lands a leg kick and Doty responds with a combo. Buzzeo looks for a double leg takedown but Doty defends and lands knees before they separate. Buzzeo again looks for the takedown but Doty reverses positions and lands more knees to the thigh. Doty secures the takedown to full mount and Buzzeo gives up his back allowing Doty to sink the rear naked choke. Doty releases and lands a few shots before going back to the rear naked choking and finishing the fight.

Eric Huang vs. Michael Banin
Round 1: Banin lands a leg kick and Huang secures a takedown to guard before passing to half guard. Banin looks for a guillotine but Huang lands shots to the body and pulls his head free. Huang passes to mount but Banin is able to get back to his feet and get a takedown of his own landing in gull guard. Banin lands a couple to the body as the round comes to an end. Round 2: Huang lands a leg kick and a power double to half guard. Banin reverses positions and lands body shots before a period of inactivity. Referee Andy Social stands them up and Banin lands a leg kick. Huang drops him with a right but can’t capitalize and slips. Banin jumps into half guard and lands body shots until the round ends. Round 3: Banin misses a high kick and Huang lands a double leg to guard. Banin looks for a kimura and rolls through to mount where he lands some shots. Huang reverses to side control before passing to full mount after a scramble. They get back to their feet and Banin lands another double against the cage. Steve Zachary vs. Justin Nanaquawetung
Round 1: Zachary kands a combo and gets a takedown landing in full mount. Zachary lands several big shots and looks to stand but can’t get back to his feet. Nanaquawetung lands some shots of his own and Zachary gets full guard before passing to half guard. Nanaquawetung lands hammer fists before moving to side control and lands big punches. Nanaquawetung looks for a kimura but Zachary defends and reverses and lands a few shots before the round ends. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Nanaquawetung

Round 2: Nanaquawetung lands a kick to the body and and body shots. Nanaquawetung jumps on his back and drags Zachary to the ground where he sinks the rear naked choke forcing his bloodied opponent to tap.

    It is too bad the ref thought Sorensen tapped and stopped the match. I would have liked to have seen it go further. Yes, he was in trouble, but Troy is a tough guy and I would have liked to see if he could have turned it around. Merrick is a classy guy though, congrats on the win. Congrats to Mike. Good fight. All in all it was a great night of fights and the amateur bouts were impressive.

    Eric Huang should drop to 125 lbs. That little fella has mad skill. Luke Harris is creating quite the team of killers at Hayabusa
