Team Brazil Invades the Freedom Fights for The Fight Exchange

By:

On Wednesday March 14th, a Canadian film crew arrived at the Nova Uniao gym to begin filming an MMA documentary series entitled, “THE FIGHT EXCHANGE”. The series will follow six mixed martial arts fighters – three from Canada, and three from Brazil – as they live, train and prepare for a professional fight in the opposing foreign country. Battling culture shock, and struggling with language barriers, the Canadian exchange fighters arrived first in Brazil, and will be taking to the cage for the toughest fight of their lives on Sunday March 25th as part of the inaugural FIGHT EXCHANGE MMA event.

Produced by Aaron Avruskin (Rebel Media Ventures – Canada) & directed by Mark Johnston (Nomad Films – Canada) The FIGHT EXCHANGE series will air on television in Canada in October 2012 on the SUPERCHANNEL network. Avruskin and Freedom Fight MMA owner Pete Rodley have worked very closely to bring this extravaganza to Sudbury sports fans. “This is going to be a huge night for Sudbury and for MMA in Canada. Our community has been chosen as THE location to host these historic bouts and I am proud that Freedom Fight was chosen as the host event.” Says Rodley.

Following the Canadians fight in Brazil, three longtime Nova Uniao fighters (Daniel Almeida, Felipe Olivieri & Claudia Gadhela) will make the long trip north to train at the newly established EVOLUCAO THAI gym in Toronto, Canada – owned and operated by fellow Brazilian Mauricio ‘Veio’ Amado – as they prepare for their fights against three tough opponents during the FREEDOM FIGHT: CAGED COMBAT event taking place Saturday April 21st in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

Nova Uniao head trainer Andre Pederneiras is thrilled with the opportunity to send his fighters to Canada, stating, “It is the dream of many Brazilian fighters to have a chance to showcase their skills on an international stage. Canada has a huge MMA fan base, and I know that FREEDOM FIGHT MMA is among the countries top independent promotions. All of my fighters train very hard, and we’re all looking forward to this opportunity”.

Brazilian female fighter Claudia Gadelha (6-0) will be taking on Julianna Pena (4-0) in a marquee matchup at 130lbs during the event. Says Claudia, “I can’t wait to fight in Canada. I know my opponent is a tough girl, but training here in Brazil is different, it’s very hard and I’m ready for whatever she throws my way”.

This will be the second female bout of the night as headliner Valerie Letourneau returns to Sudbury after an explosive knock out win last September.

Also competing on the FREEDOM FIGHT MMA card will be Nova Uniao standouts Daniel “Jacare” Almeida (7-2, 185lbs) and Felipe Olivieri (10-3, 155lbs). Felipe was in line for a shot at the SHOOTO BRAZIL 155lbs title, but opted instead to compete in Canada as part of the FREEDOM FIGHT MMA event. In his 10 victories, Felipe has only gone the distance once, so fans can expect fireworks as he takes on a soon to be disclosed opponent.

Daniel “Jacare” Almeida is also thrilled to be part of the Brazilian invasion coming to Sudbury, stating, “I know my opponent has a big record, but I don’t care about records – I just want to fight”. “Jacare” will be taking on former Bellator competitor & Team Quest
fighter, “Smilin'” Sam Alvey (17-4) in an intriguing bout at 185lbs.
