Unified MMA held their 10th event last night at the Maharaja Banquet Hall in front of packed house of raucous fans. Only two fights went to the judges scorecards with a nice mix of Submissions and Knockouts. In the main event, Unified MMA mainstay Tim “Shady” Smith captured the inaugural Lightweight Title with a quick submission victory over Calgary product Max Dalsin.

Tim Smith vs. Max Dalsin
Smith lands a pair of leg kicks and Dalsin chases Smith around the cage. Smith uses a front kick to keep him at bay and they tie up against the cage. Smith lands another leg kick and secures the takedown to half guard. Smith lands short elbows and more big punches followed by a body shot. Smith passes to side control and lands a knee to the body before taking his back. Smith looks for a rear naked choke and sinks in deep forcing the tap and capturing the Unified Lightweight title fight in the process.

Chase Maxwell vs. Rio Wells
Round 1: Maxwell lands a kick to the body but Wells catches it and dumps him to the mat but can’t get on top and Maxwell gets back to his feet. Maxwell lands a right and Wells responds with a combo and looks for the takedown. Wells abandons the takedown and lands a flurry of punches. Maxwell latches on and looks for a guillotine and lands a pair of knees. They separate and Maxwell emerges with a bloodied nose. Maxwell shoots in and gets the takedown to side control. Wells just holds on until Maxwell transitions to the back and locks on a body triangle. Maxwell looks for a rear naked choke but Wells sweeps and lands on top just as the round winds down. Round 2: Maxwell lands a leg kick and shoots for a single leg. Wells scrambles and looks for an armbar but Maxwell escapes and Wells tries again. Maxwell tries to punch his way out but Wells is still hanging on. Maxwell is finally able to escape and gets Wells into his guard before they get back to their feet. Wells takes the back and drags him down before moving to side control and landing several knees to the body. Round 3: Maxwell connects with a solid superman punch and shoots for a takedown. Wells stuffs it but lands an illegal shot to the back of the head as Maxwell tries to roll away. Referee Vern Gorman takes a point from Wells for the blow. On the restart Wells catches a leg kick and drops him with a right. Wells looks to get ahold of a leg but Maxwell has the same idea and locks on a vicious heel hook that causes Well to scream out and quickly tap out.

Robbie Merrell vs. Mike Wurz
Round 1: Wurz lands a leg kick and falls short with a right. They tie up against the cage and Wurz lands knees to the body and legs. Wurz secures a single leg to side control but ultimately ends up in half guard looking for guillotine. Wurz lands body shots and solid lefts before Merrell escapes back to his feet and looks for a standing kimura. Wurz escapes and presses him into the cage looking for a takedown but Merrell looks for an inverted triangle in the process. Wurz escapes in the final seconds of the round. Round 2: Wurz connects with a big shot and Merrell responds with a combo. Merrell looks for a single leg and lands in half guard, landing thundering elbows to the thigh. Murz begins landing some shots from the guard before Merrell gets back to his feet. Wurz presses him into the cage and secures a takedown to side control and they trade shots. Wurz comes away from the exchange with a bloody nose and ties up with Merrell against the cage for the final seconds of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Wurz

Round 3: Both land shots as the round begins and Merrell stuffs a takedown attempt. Wurz lands a knee and Merrell responds with a big shot followed by a huge kick to the body. They trade another quick flurry and exchange knees up the middle. Merrell connects on a solid left and Wurz comes back with a left of his own that backs Merrell up. They again trade heavy leather and Merrell lands an elbow followed by a nice spinning back elbow against the cage. Merrell takes the back and lands a shot to the body before landing a nice takedown to half guard. Merrell passes to full mount before Wurz gives up the back and gets caught in a rear naked choke. Robbie Merrell defeats Mike Wurz by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Josh Dugas vs. Taylor Bull
Dugas looks for a takedown and lands a knee to the chest. Bull is able to get back to his feet and looks for a single leg but is unable to complete it and they reset. Dugas attempts another takedown but Bull ends up on top in side control where he lands elbows and takes the back. Bull moves to north/south briefly until Dugas is able to replace full guard and eventually passes to mount. Dugas looks for an armbar but Bull defends and Dugas goes back to full mount. Dugas softens him up with some body shots and short elbows before securing the arm again. Bull tries to roll out but Dugas locks it on tight and referee Vern Gorman steps in and stops the bout when the armbar appears to hyperextend the elbow of Bull. Bull protests the stoppage to no avail.

Nolan Cairns vs. Mike Scarcello
Round 1: Cairns lands a leg kick and they battle for position against the cage. Cairns lands a knee and Scarcello secures a takedown to half guard. They get back to their feet but Scarcello takes him right back down with a huge belly to back suplex. Cairns again gets back to his feet but Scarcello drags him back down and looks for a rear naked choke. Scarcello releases and lands a body shot and Cairns gets back to his feet only to be taken back down with another suplex. Scarcello sticks to the back and this time looks for an arm bar. Cairns defends and gets back to his feet but goes back to the ground and lands in full guard before passing to half guard and looking for a guillotine choke. Scarcello easily escapes and scrambles to take the back landing solid rights. Cairns spins out and gives up mount, getting caught in an arm triangle. Round 2: Scarcello gets an effortless takedown and lands in half guard where he connects with a pair of lefts. Cairns replaces full guard and looks for a kimura from the bottom. Scarcello escapes and transitions to the back where he looks for a rear naked choke. Cairns defends and escapes but Scarcello tries again and again it’s defended well by Cairns who spins to guard and gets back to his feet. Scarcello lands a single leg takedown to half guard where he rides out the rest of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Scarcello

Round 3: Scarcello looks for a take down but Cairns stuffs it and lands a shot. Scarcello again looks for a take down and is successful, landing a right and ending up in full guard. Scarcello lands a trio of body shots and some short right hands. Scarcello continues landing punches before moving to the back and landing some solid hammer fists. Scarcello looks for another rear naked choke but lets go and unleashes a flurry of lefts and rights. Cairns weathers the storm and Scarcello looks for a last ditch effort at another rear naked choke but again releases and lands a few little shots as time runs out. Mike Scarcello defeats Nolan Cairns by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-27)

Merrick Duggan vs. Reno Jackson
Duggan immediately lands a huge double leg takedown to full guard before quickly passing to side control. Duggan lands a few short elbows before winding up and pounding away with a flurry of heavy lefts that force the referee to step in and call a halt to the bout.

Jevon Marshall vs. Kyle Kotylak
Kotylak falls short with a big leg kick and Marshall connects with a solid right before tying up against the cage. They jockey with neither able to establish a dominant position. Kotylak finally lands a single knee before referee Vern Gorman breaks them apart and restarts them in the centre of the cage. Kotylak shoots in for a takedown but Marshall quickly locks up a guillotine and sinks it in, coaxing the tap and ending a four fight losing streak in the process.

Ryan Rother vs. Neil Doty
Round 1: Rother lands a leg kick and Doty comes back with one of his own. Rother lands a solid right followed by a pair of leg kicks before tying up and connecting with a knee against the cage. They separate and Rother lands a combo that drops Doty but he pops right back up. Rother lands another leg kick and the two slug it out before tying up against the cage. They release and begin winging wild punches with Rother getting the better of the exchanges. Rother continues landing leg kicks and drops him with a shot. Doty gets back to his feet and lands a combo and Rother responds with some solid leg kicks. Rother backs him into the cage and lands body shots before they jockey for position. Rother lands a knee below the belt and the referee calls for a pause. On the restart, Rother lands a good combo followed by more leg kicks. Rother continues connecting with punches to the head and body and they tie up against the cage. Rother lands a trio of elbows and follows up with some ground and pound but time runs out. Round 2: Both trade shots and Doty lands one big right. Rother responds with a combo against the cage and throws big knees and crushing body shots. Rother secures the thai clinch and fires off several huge knees until referee Andy Social has seen enough and steps in the call off the fight.

Jeff Porter vs. Jared McComb
McComb fakes a punch and secures a body lock before releasing and jockying for position against the cage. McComb lands knees and secures a huge double leg landing in full guard. McComb lands a body shot and Porter responds with some hammer fists from the bottom followed by a couple upkicks. McComb drops back down to side control and lands knees to the body. McComb takes the back and flattens him out, Porter defends but is eventually succumbs to the rear naked choke and is forced to tap.

Rocky Biggs vs. Simon Shirt
The two meet in the centre of the cage and Biggs lands knees before securing the takedown to side control. Biggs hammers him with some solid lefts and Shirt tries to buck him off but is caught in a tight crucifix position. Biggs lands several more unanswered lefts before referee Andy Social steps in to rescue Shirt from any further punishment.

Andrew Bard vs. Travis Pigeon
Bard lands a shot and looks for a guillotine choke as Pigeon shoots in. Bard releases the submission attempt and tosses Pigeon to the mat before landing a soccer kick to the ribs. Bard lets him up and Pigeon rushes him only to be side stepped and thrown into the cage. Bard lands one huge right that has Pigeon tapping out however referee Vern Gorman was already in the process of stopping the bout.

Tyler Berg vs. Drew Weatherhead
Weatherhead pushes forward and secures the body lock, taking Berg down and landing in full mount. Weatherhead lands a few shots, causing Berg to give up his back. Weatherhead looks for rear naked choke and is able to slip his arm under the chin and force the tap.
