MFC 31: The Rundown – Recap

Maximum Fighting Championship put on an exciting night of fights, albeit with a anti-climactic ending with the main event. The evening had a nice mixture of decisions, submissions and knockouts with something for everyone. Light Heavyweight Champion Ryan Jimmo retained his title in slow paced razor thin decision over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.

  • Top MMA News Knockout of the Night – There was no doubt about this one as Adam Lynn floored Curtis Demarce with a vicious counter right elbow that put Demarce on dream street.
  • Top MMA News Submission of the Night – Kajan Johnson worked and worked for the rear naked choke before finally sinking it under the chin and forcing the once beaten Whitson to tap out.
  • Top MMA News Fight of the Night – Although a brief fight there was non-stop action and an impressive comeback by Krahn who finished off the BC product Chiappe with a guillotine choke.

Ryan Jimmo vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Round 1:
A very tentative start for both men as they gauge the distance for the first minute. Jimmo finally lands a leg kick and eventually another. Sokoudjou misses a kick of his own and Jimmo paws at him with jabs. A head kick falls short from Sokoudjou and he follows up with a leg kick. Sokoudjou has a head kick blocked by Jimmo who lands a kick to the body before blocking another head kick. Jimmo fires off another body kick and Sokoudjou responds with a leg kick followed by another missed head kick. Jimmo lands a final body kick before the end of the round. Round 2: A head kick from Jimmo falls short but he follows up with a jab and a leg kick. Jimmo avoids a big right, Sokoudjou lands a leg kick and the two tie up against the ropes. Sokoudjou trips Jimmo to the mat who pops right back up but a Sokoudjou knee opens up a cut right in the middle of Jimmo’s forehead. Jimmo avoids another trip and referee Vern Gorman pauses the action to allow the doctor the check the cut on Jimmo. The fight is allowed to continue and Sokoudjou looks to land a combo on the restart and Jimmo responds with some shots of his own. Jimmo lands a pair of leg kicks and a front kick from Sokoudjou doesn’t reach it’s target. Sokoudjou looks to land a head kick before the end of the round but Jimmo is able to block it. Round 3: Jimmo lands a leg kick and the two again reach a brief stalemate. Finally, Sokodjou throws another high kick with the same result as the previous ones as Jimmo again blocks it. The two tie up in the corner and Sokoudjou lands some knees and shoulder strikes. Jimmo lands knees to the legs and Sokoudjou responds with some more of his own. Sokoudjou clinches, lands knees and looks for a trip but Jimmo stays on his feet and Gorman calls for a clean break. Jimmo, another body kick and blocks another head kick. Jimmo throws a head kick of his own but this time Sokoudjou blocks. Jimmo lands a leg kick followed by a right. Round 4: Combo from Jimmo followed by a leg kick. They trade leg kicks followed by a high kick from Jimmo. Sokoudjou lands a left and ties Jimmo up against the ropes. Sokoudjou lands knees to the legs and Jimmo lands some of his own. Gorman again orders a clean break and Jimmo pops him with a jab and a pair of body kicks. Sokoudjou lands a leg kick and sticks a jab. Sokoudjou lands a body kick and Jimmo responds with a head kick that’s blocked. Jimmo lands a solid left and Sokoudjou responds with a big shot and ties Jimmo up on the ropes. Jimmo breaks away and connects with a solid knee. Round 5: Jimmo lands a combo followed by a jab and a missed high kick. Jimmo lands a body kick and Sokoudjou lands a body kick of his own but eats a left and a right from Jimmo before a jab right up the pipe connects. Sokoudjou closes the distance and again ties up against the ropes, landing knees to the legs. They trade short body shots and Sokoudjou connects with more knees. Jimmo reverses positions before they are broken apart again. Sokoudjou lands a leg kick and Jimmo responds with a right that falls short. Sokoudjou lands a kick to the body and Jimmo again comes right back with a solid jab. Sokoudjou shoots in for a double leg but Jimmo ends up on top, Jimmo briefly looks for a kimura before they get back to their feet. The two trade shots and Sokoudjou lands another knee. Kajan Johnson vs. Richie Whitson
Whitson throws a leg kick and Johnson responds with a kick to the body. Whitson catches the kick and the two tie up. They separate and throw wild shots. The pace slows and Whitson lands a leg kick and Johnson responds with a right. Whitson looks for a take down and Johnson defends and drags him down himself. Johnson takes the back but they get back to their feet and Johnson lands knees to the legs against the ropes. Johnson looks for a suplex but Whitson is able to minimize the damage. Johnson is still able to scramble and take the back, looking for a rear naked choke. Whitson is defending well and spins out with Johnson now in mount. Johnson switches between back control and mount before finally sticking with the back and is eventually able to slip his arm under the chin and force the tap out.

Curtis Demarce vs. Adam Lynn
Demarce rushes forward immediately and lands a body shot. Demarce follows up with a combo and a leg kick. Demarce continues to land shots although nothing with significant power. Demarce throws a right and Lynn throws an enormous counter right elbow that puts Demarce out and drops him to the mat like a sack of potatoes. Lynn drops another big bomb and a follow up right on the already unconscious Demarce before referee Vern Gorman is able to get in between and rescue Demarce from any further damage.

Mukai Maromo vs. Sabah Fadai
Round 1: Both men trade solid leg kicks and Maromo connects with a few more. Again the two trade kicks before tying up against the ropes. The two scramble and end up on the ground only to pop back to their feet. Maromo lands a shot followed by a leg kick and a solid body kick. Maromo lands another leg kick and a head kick that just clips Fadai. Maromo digs another thunderous leg kick into the thigh before a clash of shins between the two fighters. Maromo takes a finger in the eye and he’s given time to recover. On the restart Maromo lands a jab followed by a leg kick and a body kick. Fadai throws a head kick and Maromo blocks it and lands a leg kick. Fadai lands a leg kick of his own but Maromo comes back with a kick to the body. Maromo lands a huge right followed by a take down to full guard where he hangs out until the end of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Maromo

Round 2: Maromo continues to land leg kicks followed by a clinch and some solid knees. Maromo misses a head kick but follows up with another that puts Fadai on the mat. Fadai pops back up and lands a shot. Maromo secures the clinch and lands more knees. Maromo lands a body kick and Fadai falls to the ground. Maromo lands a pair of crushing leg kicks and Fadai’s thigh is beginning to show the wear of the punishing kicks. Maromo lets Fadai back to his feet and Maromo continues to land leg kicks. Maromo catches a body kick and kicks Fadai’s legs out from under him. Maromo again allows him to stand and Fadai misses a head kick as the round comes to an end. Round 3: Maromo sticks with what’s working and slams more leg kicks into the thighs of Fadai before a high kick falls short. Maromo lands a teep kick to the thigh followed by another leg kick. Fadai shoots in but Maromo clinches. Maromo separates and lands a body kick and Fadai responds with a kick of his own. Mukai continues to chop Fadai down, again dropping him with leg kicks. Maromo allows him to stand and lands more kicks followed by a pair of solid rights. Fadai lands a trip takedown to half guard before they get back to their feet and Maromo lands a leg kick and a head kick. Mukai side steps a punch and lands another crushing leg kick. Mukai drops him with another leg kick and allows him back up only to land another leg kick followed by a combo in the dying seconds of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Maromo

Terry Martin vs. Allen Hope
The two trade wild shots with Martin connecting with greater power and accuracy. Martin lands a solid body shot and more punches. They tie up on the ropes and Martin takes him to the mat landing in full guard. Martin works the body in between short elbows and big punches. Martin begins to land harder and faster until referee John Braak is finally forced to step in and rescue Hope from any further punishment.

Cody Krahn vs. Ryan Chiappe
The two trade shots and Chiappe lands a pair of leg kicks before securing a takedown to full guard. Chiappe lands solid shots before posturing up and landing more heavy shots. Krahn looks to be in trouble as two more huge rights connect. Chiappe takes the back and looks for a rear naked choke but Krahn is able to defend and slip out the back. Krahn winds up in half guard and lands elbows before connecting with a few more big shots before the two get back to their feet. They trade shots before Krahn locks on a guillotine choke and drags him to the mat and forcing Chiappe to tap out.

Mike Froese vs. Dajan Kajic
Kajic fires off a head kick but it’s blocked by Froese who shoots in for a take down. Kajic inadvertently catches Froese with an eye poke and time is called. The doctor enters to check the eye. Froese indicates that he wants to continue and the fight is allowed to continue, however on the restart, once Kajic advances toward Froese, he indicates that he couldn’t see and indicates that he cannot continue. Referee Kyle Cardinal waves off the fight and it’s declared a no contest.

Garett Nybakken vs. James Haddad
They open with pawing jabs until Haddad sticks a pair of jabs and follows up with a few leg kicks. The two tie up in the corner and jockey for position against the ropes until Haddad secures a beautiful take down landing in half guard. Haddad begins to land several elbows before passing to full mount and landing big punches and sharp elbows. Haddad moves to side control and Nybakken is able to replace half guard. Haddad moves to north/south where he looks for a d’arce choke before switching to a guillotine and forcing Nybakken to submit.

Neal Anderson vs. Dan Ring
Round 1: Ring lands a body kick followed by a leg kick and Anderson responds with a combo and a leg kick. Ring swings away but is unable to connect. The two tie up against the ropes before Ring lands a take down and gets to half guard before Anderson replaces full guard. Ring postures up and lands hammer fists followed by some solid rights that connect. Ring passes to side control and lands knees to the body. Ring passes to mount but Anderson controls the hands and escapes back to his feet. They exchange punches until Ring gets a double leg take down to full guard. Ring passes to side mount and lands hammer fists. Ring stands briefly but drops back into guard. Anderson looks for a triangle but Ring defends easily and Ring hangs out in the guard for final seconds of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Ring

Round 2: Both exchange before Ring throws him to the ground and drops a big hammer fist from his feet. Anderson connects with an upkick and gets back to his feet. Ring lands a leg kick and ties up against the ropes. Anderson secures the take down but ring rolls through and lands in full guard. Ring stands up and Anderson follows but takes a kick to the midsection on the way up. They trade shots but neither land anything significant and they tie up against the ropes again. Ring lands another take down and begins landing shots from the guard. Anderson scrambles away and looks to latch on for a leg lock but is unable to secure anything. Anderson attempts to stand but Ring holds him down in side control and lands shots until the round ends. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Ring

Round 3: They again trade shots to open the round and Ring lands a body kick. They tie up against the ropes and Anderson lands a knee. Dan lands knees to the legs in the clinch and they separate and paw at each other with jabs. Ring again ties up against the the ropes and Anderson looks for a guillotine. Ring easily escapes and Ring secures the take down and lands in half guard before passing to side control. Ring looks for a kimura but Anderson defends and escapes only to get caught in a triangle. Ring lands huge elbows from the mounted triangle position and continues to land elbows and punches until the end of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Ring

    Did anyone else notice how Jimmo’s opponents gloves were tampered with after being allowed to take them home overnight by Pat Reid? One could clearly see the knife edge sides of the gloves were cut out exposing the hand wraps! This gave him an opportunity to grab easier and as a puncher more room for his knuckles to move outside the glove when striking!

    Why this was allowed in the first place is unbelievable. Why it wasn’t caught by the corner supervisor during taping is a head scratcher…
