Unified MMA 9: Play-By-Play


Unified MMA packed the Mirage Banquet Hall with 10o0 rabid MMA fans for their 9th offering tonight and when all was said and done everyone went home happy after an entertaining night of fights. Advin Omic moved one step closer to a title shot against current Welterweight Champion Travis Briere and Unified mainstay Tim “Shady” Smith earned himself a shot at the vacant Lightweight title in his next bout.

Chase Maxwell vs. Advin Omic
Round 1: Omic connects with a shot and Maxwell shoots in for a single leg against the cage. Maxwell switches to the body lock and drags him to the mat however Omic lands on top in full guard and lands body shots and short elbows. Omic gets back to his feet and Maxwell tries to stand but Omic takes his back and lands a pair of lefts followed by about a dozen more solid shots. Both fighters get back to their feet and Maxwell lands an errant knee to the groin. Omic is given time to recover and on the restart Maxwell lands a leg kick before they both trade punches and Maxwell secures the takedown but Omic rolls through and lands in full guard and neither make any progress before the round ends. Round 2: Maxwell throws a leg kick but Omic catches it, lands a shot and uses it to take him down with a double leg to the ground and gets his back in the ensuing scramble. Omic secures the deep body triangle and looks for the rear naked choke. Omic looks to soften him up with shots while Maxwell defends the choke. Omic continues to work for the submission and continues to pepper him with strikes while trying to lock up the submission. Omic is finally able to slide the arm under the chin but Maxwell endures and peels his arm from his throat and fights the arms until the round ends. Top MMA News scores the round 10-8 for Omic

Round 3: Omic lands a leg kick and the two clinch before Omic lands a double leg to Maxwell’s high full guard. Omic lands shots to the body before Maxwell briefly threatens with a triangle, Omic avoids the submission and gets to his feet only to drop right back down with a right. Omic again stands and lands another pair of shots and drops into the full guard. Omic stands and passes to side control before taking the back. Maxwell sweeps and gets to side control, looking for an arm bar but Omic escapes to side control before passing to full mount where he lands lefts and body shots until the round comes to a close. Advin Omic defeats Chase Maxwell via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26)

Tim Smith vs. Mike Bell
Round 1: Smith lands a jab followed by a front kick and a body kick. Bell catches a kick and lands a take down to side control. Smith sweeps to half guard and lands several body shots followed by a big left and a right and more body shots. Smith gets to his feet and drops back down into half guard with a right hand. Smith lands more big punches and short elbows followed by some body shots. Smith looks to secure a guillotine but Bell reverses and gets to guard. Smith looks for an arm bar and Bell defends with big right punches. Bell escapes to his feet and drops a huge left before taking the back and looking for a rear naked choke. Smith escapes the choke and gets to half guard before landing a some punches in the final ten seconds. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Smith

Round 2: Smith connects with a jumping knee and the two trade shots before Smith lands a kick to the body. Smith executes a take down and lands in half guard, connecting with a few shots before getting back to his feet and dropping a solid elbow and falling into Bell’s guard. Smith alternates shots to the body and the head before picking Bell up and slamming him to the mat. Smith stands back up and again drops back into the half guard with a big punch and pounds away with more body shots and punches to the head. Smith again gets up and lands another punch to his downed opponent. Smith, in half guard fights off a guillotine attempt from Bell on the bottom. Smith drives his knees to the body and Bell latches on, looking for a heel hook but Smith is able to pull his foot out and drop one final right before the round ends. Round 3: The two fighters meet against the cage an unleash huge combos before Bell attempts to secure a guillotine and the two go to the mat. Smith lands on top and escapes the guillotine and looks for one of his own but Bell escapes and Smith instead tries for a rear naked choke. Smith releases the hold and moves to full mount. Smith lands a right and again takes the back and looks for another rear naked choke and Bell again escapes. Smith lands an elbow followed by more shots from the back position. Smith goes back to the well, looking for yet another rear naked choke but again Bell defends. Smith continues to work for the rear naked choke between strikes. Bell spins to mount and eats a trio of punches followed by some short elbows which prompt him to give up his back again. Smith’s persistence pays off as he finally is able to coax the fight ending tap from Bell in a hard fought performance.

Mark Burns vs. Jordan McKay
Burns falls short with a jumping switch kick and McKay responds with leg kicks and a huge head kick that sends Burns’ mouth guard flying. McKay jumps on his back and looks for a rear naked choke, but Burns shakes him off. Referee Kyle Cardinal pauses to replace Burns mouth guard. McKay clinches and executes a beautiful trip takedown, landing in full guard. McKay rattles off several huge shots that bloody the mouth of Burns. McKay stays on him and busts him wide open with a vicious onslaught of elbows and punches. Cardinal steps in and calls upon the doctor, who takes one look at the cut and immediately stops the fight giving McKay the victory in his return.

Merrick Duggan vs. Jevon Marshall
The crowd explodes as Duggan is announced and the fight begins with Marshall landing a straight punch on a Duggan take down attempt. The two jockey against the cage before referee Vern Gorman pause the action to take a point from Marshall for grabbing the cage to leverage a knee. Duggan secures a double leg and lands in full guard before posturing up and landing a few dozen powerful unanswered punches. Marshall is finally able to get out from underneath him and drive forward for a take down but Duggan locks on a guillotine choke and induces the fight ending tap out.

Mark Drummond vs. Adam Blackwell
Round 1: The two trade jabs and Blackwell lands a spinning back kick to the mid-section. Drummond secures a take down to half guard and lands a body shot. Blackwell reverses and gets to side control only to be reversed by Drummond who lands an elbow from side control followed by several body shots. Blackwell again spins out and lands in side control before getting back to his feet against the cage. Drummond works for a single leg as the round comes to an end. Round 2: Drummond lands a front kick followed by a leg kick and Blackwell ties up before Drummond secures a take down to side control. Drummond lands short elbows and moves to north/south position before landing more shots. Blackwell reverses and gets to side control landing elbows and psses to full mount. Drummond escapes and Blackwell moves to north/south before taking the back and landing body shots. Blackwell looks to stand but Drummond keeps him down and takes side control and lands elbows to the body before passing to full mount. Blackwell gives up his back and Drummond looks for an arm bar but the clock runs out and Blackwell survives. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Drummond

Round 3: Blackwell lands a front kick and the two tangle against the cage until Blackwell looks for the double and switches to the single. Drummond lands a knee and they both trade knees to the thighs. They jockey for position against the cage and Drummond lands more knees. Drummond drags him to the ground but Blackwell ends up taking the back and landing punches. Drummond bucks and lands in side control before connecting with a pair of rights from north/south. Sean Carr vs. Anthony Lightning
Round 1: The two briefly feel each other out before Carr looks for a take down and gets caught in a guillotine. Carr pulls his head free and the two enter a stalemate on the mat. Carr eventually stands up and lands a few rights before dropping back down to side control. Lightning reverses and ends up in the full guard and after a lull in the action Lightning finally lands a few shots from the top position. Referee Kyle Cardinal stands them up after some inactivity and Lightning lands a leg kick. Carr shoots for a takedown but Lightning defends against the cage until the round ends. Round 2: Lightning lands a big leg kick followed by a missed Superman punch. Carr secures a double leg take down, landing in side control. Lightning lands a pair of elbows from the bottom and Carr responds with some rights that land. Lightning replaces his guard and lands a slicing elbow that cuts Carr on the top of the head. Lightning lands two more elbows but this time they cut the back of the head and Cardinal pauses the action and takes a point from Lightning for the illegal blows. On the restart, Carr lands a leg kick and Lightning responds with one of his own. The two continue to go shot for shot with leg kicks until Lightning lands a very hard inside leg kick that spins Carr around and Lightning follows up with a solid right. Round 3: Lightning continues to pepper the legs with precise kicks before Carr looks for a take down and eats an uppercut in the process. Carr again goes for the take down, this time landing in side control. Carr lands body shots until Lightning gets full guard back. Carr lands several solid rights and body shots before getting to his feet. Cardinal brings Lightning to his feet and he lands a leg kick followed by a head kick that’s blocked by Carr who looks for a single leg before switching to a double but is unable to secure to take down prior to the end of the round. Anthony Lightning and Sean Carr fight to a Majority Draw (29-27-AL, 28-28, 28-28)

Chris Ariel vs. Kyle Kotylak
Kotylak rushes forward only to get taken down to side control. Ariel lands elbows to the body followed by some big rights before passing to full mount and landing more punches. Kotylak turtles and eats more shots before Ariel looks for a rear naked choke. Kotylak spins out but Ariel lands more rights before Kotylak is able to buck him off and gets back to his feet but Ariel puts him right back down landing in half guard and continues to land body shots. Ariel stands, clears the legs and drops another huge right and follows up more more heavy ground and pound until referee Vern Gorman steps in to rescue Kotylak from any further punishment.

Josh Dugas vs. Simon Shirt
Dugas extends his hands for a glove touch during the referee’s instructions but Shirt refuses. After a slow start, Shirt lunges forward with a combo that falls short of the target and Dugas uses Shirt’s momentum to take him to the mat, landing in full mount. Shirt does nothing but hold on tight and gets slammed while Dugas inches towards his corner. Shirt looks to buck him off but Dugas quickly latches onto his arm and secures a deep arm bar forcing Shirt to tap immediately.

Robbie Merrill vs. Adrian Cardinal
Cardinal comes out aggressive looking to chase Merrill down to land shots but Merrill avoids the onslaught and ties up against the cage. Merrill lands a leg kick followed by a straight left that drops Cardinal but he pops right back to his feet. Merrill lands another solid combo and again they tie up against the cage. Cardinal drops down looking for a leg but Merrill places a thunderous knee to the body and ends up in half guard before landing some huge elbows. Cardinal pops his head up briefly and Merrill seizes the moment and locks up a guillotine choke. Cardinal defends but gradually fades and is forced to tap out.

Jeremy Aucoin vs. Grant Houle
Aucoin lands a kick and the two trade shots, Houle stumbles to the mat and Aucoin follows him down, landing in full guard. Aucoin drives him into the cage before standing and landing a shot. Aucoin lets Houle to his feet and the two clash with front kicks before Houle connects with a kick to the body and looks for a guillotine. Aucoin scoops Houle up with a single leg and slams him to the ground but gets caught in a guillotine again. Aucoin escapes and takes full mount before landing some punches. Houle gives up his back but escapes and looks to take the back himself. The two get back to their feet and both fighters look gassed but dig deep and start winging wild looping shots against the cage. Aucoin gets the better of the exchange and Houle walks away and indicates to referee Kyle Cardinal that he’s had enough and heads for the cage door, giving Aucoin the victory.
