Canadian Rumour Mill – September 5

By:
Its a long weekend here in the great white north.  Unfortunately, its a short rumour mill.
  • Rodrigo Munduruca’s fight has been scrapped from the Canadian Fighting Championship 7 card.
  • AX Combat will be holding their second show this coming November.  The event will once again be held in Calgary.
  • Looks like John Fraser will need a new opponent with Alvin Robinson signing to fight the Featherweight stud Adam Lorenz on Aggression 8 “Unfinished Business”.
  • Two challenging fights in a row for Baz Cunningham. First it was announced that he’s fighting Freddy Assuncao on the upcoming Aggression show, now I’m hearing he’ll be taking on Shawn Albrecht on BFL 13.
  • Speaking of Battlefield, Graham Spencer will headline the 13th instalment of their show, most likely fighting for a title in Nanaimo, BC.
  • Sounds like Ontario is not the only place where a career in policing and MMA do not mix.  Like Sean Pierson in Ontario, Guillaume Fortier in Quebec has been told to stop fighting.    Apparently, it harms the image of la police.
  • Score Fighting Series keeps setting up great Canadian fights. Stephane Bernadel will go at it with Will Romero in a fight that will most likely have Canadian Top 10 ranking implications.

Can’t fight and be a cop at the same time? That’s pretty sad.

Sad – especially since those cops who abuse us civilians get full support and backing of the higher-ups.

I would rather my hometown police force be a bunch of trained cage fighters.

AX Combat, Bobby. Calgary show, had their first one this summer. That’s where Sheila Bird fought Kim Couture. I had the privelage of seeing that fight live. Main even was over quick, but otherwise pretty solid show, some fun fights to watch.

It was awesome to be a part of AX’s first card. The show ran smooth, lots of ppl in the audience, great production and I loved the ring, I was a ring virgin before that. Hey Assassin, I hope to be on the next one!

As law enforcement officer and a Muay Thai practitioner with designs on a few amateur fights for myself, I find this trend disturbing.

I don’t suffer from foul’s gladly. I understand that some promotions may have shady connections and some fighters choose to associate with the criminal element. But no one fighter should be judged by another fighter’s or promoter’s actions.

I haven’t a clue how being in superior shape, practicing martial arts, and prize fighting in any way negatively effects how the general public views law enforcement.

Personally, I’m more concerned with out-of-shape officers sitting around coffee shops.
