One FC – Another 2011 Montreal Card Bites the Dust
For the third time this year, a Montreal MMA event has been called off on short notice, this time Fabio Holanda‘s ONE FC, which was set to make its debut next Friday, September 2nd at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau.
The news, first reported by Fightworld.tv, means the city’s fight fans will have to wait until October to see pro bouts live in action, when UGC, Instinct MMA, and Ringside MMA are holding events. For fighters on the cancelled card, it means no payday next Friday.
Compounding a rough year for small-to-mid-level Montreal promotions, the ONE FC pull-out comes on the steps of March’s MFL 4 shutdown, and more recently, June’s Challenge MMA annulment. A collapsed fight card has once more been reported as the cause. Recently sporting ten fights, sources suggest the total had fallen to as little as five a week out from the event. Sources also indicate a scrambled effort was made to plug the card’s holes, ultimately to no avail.
Originally featuring the debut of ten different fighters, the card was also to mark the return, among others, of Montreal’s Tim Wadsworth (5-0), who was set to take on Seiji Sugiman-Marangos (4-1) in an intriguing featherweight match-up. The 28 year-old Wadsworth has finished all five of his fights within the 1st round (3 TKOs, 2 submission), but has only been seen in action once in the past two-and-a-half years. He was also scheduled to take part in the cancelled Challenge MMA card. Marangos was seen locally in May at Rising Star 3, where he earned a 3rd round TKO victory.
Fightworld reports the card will be rescheduled, though it remains to be seen if and when this will be the case.
