Top 10 Maple Leaf Match Ups in May

Ricky Goodall

It’s time again friends for Top MMA News’ Top 10 Maple Leaf Match Ups. May is another month loaded head to toe with cards spanning the country.  However, one problem is that not all cards this month have been finalized. We here at Top MMA News implore all promoters and matchmakers to have their cards set at least 30 days out from fight time. To be fair, there are plenty of interesting and intriguing match ups already set, so many in fact that picking the 10 was harder then ever.

10. Steve Rogers (4-3) vs. Ricky Goodall (6-4)
Elite 1 MMA – Moncton – May 7
Two of the east coast’s top Lightweights go to war for the Elite 1 MMA title. The P.E.I native Rogers, has gone 4-1 in his last 5 fights. The Island Impact trained fighter has earned all his wins between the bells with his losses coming against top competitors like Iraj Hadin, Matt MacGrath and Rory McDonell. Goodall is 3-0 in Elite 1 MMA but has only won once in his last four fights. After tough loses to Sean Pierson, Travis Briere and Alex Garcia, Goodall looks to rejuvenate his career at Lightweight and taking Elite 1’s title home is a great way to start.

9. Lindsey Hawkes (5-4) vs. Nathan Gunn (7-2)
Wreck MMA – Gatineau – May 6
This is an incredibly intriguing match up as the wily Hawkes takes on the rebounding Gunn. Hawkes may be 1-2 in his last three but those losses included UFC standout John Makdessi and a gutsy decision loss to Guillaume De Lorenzi. The MFC veteran Gunn looks to rebound after two consecutive highlight reel KO losses to Pete Spratt and Jesse Juarez. This tilt has fireworks written all over it and will say a lot about these two gentlemen’s careers. Can Hawkes finally turn the corner in his career and string together a few wins against tough competition? Or will Gunn come back after two devastating losses and continue his meteoric rise he previously was on?

Brad Cardinal

8. Rob Yundt (7-4) vs. Ryan Machan (12-7)
PFC 7 – Red Deer – May 13
Don’t let Machan’s record fool you, this Pure Fitness MMA trained fighter holds wins over Gavin Neil, Kajan Johnson and Brad Cardinal. Alaskan native Yundt had a great start to his career winning his first six and receiving a call from the UFC. After suffering back to back losses in the big show, Yundt has only gone 1-2 since. With both men coming off losses, they both need a big win to turn things around. With the heat turned up on both men, the Red Deer fans will be treated to a fast paced, entertaining affair. Let’s hope Machan can finally add a UFC veteran scalp to his MMA mantle.

7. Brad Cardinal (12-6) vs. Jesse Gross (6-0)
Wreck MMA – Gatineau – May 6
Two Lightweights look to add a championship belt in this WRECK bout. Gross, an Adrenaline Training Centre trained fighter has looked unbelievable since making his debut in 2009, finishing all his opponents via TKO. Cardinal, a seven year veteran of the sport and Canada’s sixth ranked Lightweight, will be coming off his first loss in three years and will look to end Gross’ winning streak. The Bonesaw has only gone to a decision once in his 12 wins while facing stiff competition in the form of Thierry Quenneville, Myles Merola and Kurt Southern. This title fight is a great bit of matchmaking as no one can tell who will take the inaugural Wreck MMA strap home, the sly veteran or the rising protégé.

6. Louis-Philippe Carle (8-2) vs. Frank Lester (6-5)
MMA Live 1 – London – May 19
Carle, one of Canada’s brighter stars in the Welterweight division, looks to continue rising up the Welterweight ladder. Fresh off a huge win over the tough Rio Wells in December, The Joker looked to capitalize on that win but unfortunately suffered a rotator injury that kept him on the shelf for the first half of 2011. Now training at Zahabi MMA, Louis looks to use TUF veteran Lester to solidify himself as a contender in Canada. Lester, a one time UFC veteran has gone 2-3 since being released by the big show. Frank, who now trains out of Team Quest will look to use his wrestling advantage to nullify Carle’s strong submission game.

5. Nick Denis (9-2) vs. Kyle Dietz (5-2)
MMA Live 1 – London – May 19
Having not fought for over a year, fans will finally be able to see the return to the ring of Top MMA News’s top Bantamweight Nick “The Ninja of Love” Denis. The former KOTC Canada Featherweight champion has swapped camps since his submission loss to Yuji Hoshino, and now trains at Canada’s Mecca for MMA, Zahabi MMA. Denis will face stern competition in the form of two time WEC veteran Kyle Dietz. Dietz, a strong wrestler from Davenport, Iowa, also makes his return to the cage after suffering back to back losses in the WEC. Denis, who is on the cusps of receiving a big show offer, is in a must win situation on May 19 and Dietz is no one’s stepping stone. London MMA fans will be the only true winners when they get treated to this fantastic Bantamweight duel.

4. Cory MacDonald (12-2) vs. Marcus Aurelio (20-9)
MMA Live 1 – London – May 19
After two years of hearing all the hate and criticism, Kingston’s own Cory Mac will finally step into the cage against top tier competition. After taking a narrow split decision victory over Thiago Goncalves at Heat XC in 2009, MacDonald has only fought twice earning easy wins over lesser opponents in Chester Post and Chris Vorano. MacDonald, who also switched camps and joined up with Zahabi MMA, is in for a tough night when he steps in the cage against UFC and Pride veteran Marcus Aurelio. Aurelio has fought on the world’s biggest stages and has faced some of the world’s top fighters like Shinya Aoki, Takanori Gomi, Tyson Griffin and Clay Guida. Hopefully size will play a factor in this fight as both men possess strong ground games – MacDonald is a true welterweight while Aurelio has fought the majority of his career at 155.

Eric Wilson

3. Eric Wilson (5-0) vs. John Fraser (7-3)
WRECK MMA – Gatineau – May 6
Top MMA News’ #4 ranked Bantamweight
will square off against our number #6 Featherweight as Eric Wilson meets John “Haggis Basher” Fraser for the vacant Wreck MMA Bantamweight title. Wilson a Saskatoon native, burst onto the national scene when he earned a split decision win over #3 ranked Bantamweight Roland Delorme. The Haggis Basher is the W-1 Featherweight champion earning his title by defeating Thierry Quenneville. Now dropping down to 135, Fraser will look to continue his dominance on the national scene and hand Wilson his first professional loss.

2. Ryan Ford (14-3) vs. Karo Parisyan (19-6)
MMA Live 1 – London – May 19
Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford will finally get his wish of taking on international renowned competition when he steps into the cage opposite of former UFC contender Karo “The Heat” Parisyan. With the MFC contract debacle behind him, the extremely vocal Ford will look to increase his stock with a win over the veteran judoka. The Real Deal is 6-1 in his last 7, losing only to rising star Douglas Lima. Parisyan, on the other hand, seems to be on the down side of his career. After testing positive for a banned substance, admitting to addiction and a myriad of personal issues, Parisyan returned to the UFC only to fail to make weight and suffer a quick TKO loss to the resurging Dennis Hallman. It’s still up in the air as to what version on The Heat we will see in the cage come May 19th but for the fans sake, let’s hope Karo comes in raring and ready to go.

Denis Kang

1. Denis Kang (33-12-2) vs. Jesse Taylor (18-6)
Battlefield Fight League 8 – Nanaimo – May 28
March’s number two ranked bout returns again in May at number one. After suffering an injury prior to their first scheduled meeting, Kang was able to stay active by defeating Eun Soo Lee in Korea last month at Light-Heavyweight. Taylor remained on the March 26 BFL card and destroyed Clay Davidson who took the fight on short notice. Kang, Top MMA News` number 1 ranked Middleweight, will need to bring everything he has worked on at Zahabi MMA when he takes on the Team Quest trained JT Money. Taylor, who favours a top position wrestling game, will look to use his heavy hands and superb double leg to topple Kang. Kang brings great foot work, crisp strikes and strong submission game to counter the American wrestling game of the TUF veteran.
