AFC 5 Play-by-Play

AFC 5 had a talent stacked card and a fan packed arena. The fights were full on with little time wasted on sizing each other up. Nobody went home disappointed, the fighters gave their all. It was the show the AFC will use as a benchmark as they produce future cards.

  • Submission of the Night –  Chris “the Hooligan” Jones for his nice Heel Hook. A close close second to Karl Bergen.
  • TKO of the Night – Sarah Kaufman really put on a striking clinic and TKO’d Megumi Yabushita
  • Fight of Night – Derek Medler\Jarod Milko

 

Fight 1
Chris “The Hooligan” Jones vs Leif Optland

Round 1
The first round starts with Optland’s left kick grazing the side of Jones’ head. Jones runs through Optland’s straight left and right and pounds a combo of jabs and right hooks into Optland’s face and body followed by a straight right kick into Optland’s abdomen. Optland advances quickly into a clinch.  Jones backs up and pulls Optland into a perfectly timed hip toss into the base of the cage. Jones immediately climbs into Optland”s half guard and lands a hard left elbow grind into the skull of Optland.  Optland tries to escape the onslaught as Jones lands a couple of hammer fists to the face of Optland and nasty right elbows to his ribs. Jones rises to break and steals Optland’s loose left foot, drops back down on his butt and cinches in a deep Heel Hook. Optland grabs Jones’ left foot and attempts to twist Jones’ foot by using both of his free hands. Jones arches his back to apply maximum pressure on the ankle of Optland who wisely taps out.

Fight 2
Nathan “Road House” Swayze vs Warren “Die Hard” Anderson

Round 1
Fighters meet at center ring for a little range testing, throw ineffective punches and kicks then clinch. The fighters find themselves against the fence, each vying for control of the other. Both fighters land some hard left hooks and elbows until Swayze reaches for a double leg take down and drags Anderson to the mat. Anderson defends from further punishment and using the fence works his way back up to his feet. Back to center ring, both fighters swing big hard rights that connect. Swayze followed up with a left that stuns Anderson and drops him to his knees. Anderson pops back up and is smashed by a left jab and right by Swayze. Swayze picks Anderson up around the waist turns him upside down and slams him on his head to the mat. Swayze straddles Anderson and lays into him with a few hammer fists than Swayze catches a arm attempts a Kimara at the horn.

Round 2
Swayze comes out fast and goes on the attack. Swayze delivers right and left combos and a straight kick to Anderson’s midsection. Swayze takes Anderson down to the mat with a single leg and trip and starts in with some ground and pound. Left elbows and short right body shots encourages Anderson to escape and he makes his way to his feet. Swayze walks into Anderson delivering excellent jabs, straight rights and hard body kicks from the left and right. Swayze drags Anderson to the mat. Anderson finds himself in the guard of Swayze and does little to advance or take advantage of the position.  Anderson pops out of guard and stands back to allow Swayze to regain his feet. Swayze comes at Anderson landing bombs in the form of right hooks and straight lefts and gets Anderson against the cage where both fighters use the knee to cause hurt. Swayze than drags Anderson down to the mat and lands some elbows and body shots, takes side control and just as the pain rain began, the horn sounded.

Round 3
Both fighters meet in the middle for a trade off of punches and kicks, but little connects. Swayze catches a leg and takes Anderson down. Anderson turns and Swayze maneuvers to Anderson’s back, slips in both hooks, and sinks in a gabled rear naked choke for a tap out at 1:53 of the third round.

Fight 3
Karl “the Viking” Bergen vs Todd “Ganster” Mabbot

Round 1
Fighters both testing the waters for less than 10 seconds, then come together in an exchange of jabs and straight kicks. Bergen shoots in for a well aimed take down and ground and pounds his way from Mabbot’s guard to side control. Bergen gets a hold of a loose  left arm and  attempts to turn a Kimura as he digs his right foot around Mabbot’s high thigh to place one hook in. Releasing the Kimura, Bergen unleashes a right hand pounding to Mabbot’s chin, cheek and ear and ends the round with a mighty powerful looking right knee to the ribs of Mabbot.

Round 2
Mabbot quickly approaches Bergen and throws a looping left leg kick that looked real good but missed. Bergen, looking real dangerous, shoots in and blows through Mabbot’s defense for a take down. From Mabbot’s guard Bergen, postures up and cluster bombs Mabbot’s face with rights. Then, Bergen lands wicked elbows to Mabbot’s head as he gains half guard. Mabbot turtles and Bergen makes the transition through side control to north south with Mabbot’s arms and back exposed. Bergen turns a quick and nasty Kimura causing Mabbot to tap out.

Fight 4
Connor Wood vs Dia Grant
Round 1
Both fighters come out aggressive and exchange a few quick jabs. Wood steps in and plants a hard straight left into Grant’s face followed by a right leg to the side and some hard left hooks to the face and rights to the ribs of Grant. Back to center of the mat, Wood danced in and out of Grant’s defense landing nice jabs and attempting a wicked overhand right that just failed to connect. Then a close quarters battle ensued with Grant’s shots being avoided by Wood as Wood landed at will ending the exchange with a well placed right uppercut. Grant reaches for a muay thai clinch and just missed Wood’s chin with a fast right knee. Grant drops in for a two leg take down and succeeds in getting Wood to the mat. Wood controls Grant’s posture by grabbing his left wrist then working his way back to the feet with his back to the fence. The standing fighters go at each other with good toe to toe, tagging each other with nasty jabs, hard hooks and good leg kicks. Wood and grant clinch and fall to the mat as they attempt to knee each other. Wood gets caught in a right arm bar for a split second, pulls out and dives down on top of grant to render a hail storm of left elbows, right and left hammer fists and right and left hooks from above. TKO ref stoppage due to strikes.

Fight 5
Dan “the Samurai” Lin vs Josh “Beefstorm” Spong
Round 1
Lin comes right out after Spong and lands a left leg to Spong’s thigh and throws in straight rights and lefts. Spong returns the favor with an overhand right and a straight right leg kick to the liver of Lin. The fighters go to the clinch at mid mat and Lin drops in for a double leg take down. In Spong’s guard, Lin postures up and loses an arm to Spong who tries to pull off an arm bar. Lin rolls and pulls out of the attempt and turns back into the guard of Spong. Lin works free from Spong’s posture control and lands a hard left to his face. Lin misses on his next few striking attempts due to the excellent defense of Spong. Lin turns and attempts to get a knee bar but Spong rolls out and comes up onto Lin’s back as the horn sounds.

Round 2
Kicks and punches from both fighters to start the round. Lin landing good left jabs, straight rights, and vicious inside leg kicks. Spong trading with right and left hooks and a left push kick to separate the two. The fighters clinch and drift to the fence where Lin trips Spong and lands in his guard. Lin postures up and lands right elbows to Spong’s face and left body shots to his ribs. Spong tries to lift his legs for a triangle and Lin drops a devastating elbow that causes  Spong to go into defense and avoidance mode. Lin stacks Spong on the fence and lays in with left and right fists to Spong’s face and one last left elbow to end the round.

Round 3
Lin shoots in for a single leg and drops Spong to the mat. Lin spins into the north south position and lands knees to Spong’s guts. Lin turns into side control and plants more knees and lands a few elbows to Spong’s face. Attempting to take a full mount, Lin is pushed over to the other side and quickly jumps into half guard and working the G&P he advances into full mount and reigns down hard right elbows to the head of Spong till the Ref stepped in.

Fight 6
Nick Driedger vs Brendan Frost

Round 1
Great start to the fight with both fighters trading hard, well aimed jabs and body kicks. A right leg kick from Driedger to Frost’s outside left leg followed by a straight left and right cross backs Frost into the fence where the fighters clinch and go down to the mat with Diedger getting the trip. Frost uses the fence to work up to his feet and pounds Driedger’s right rib cage with a few left hooks on the way. Free of each other, they quickly reengage, the trade is fair until Driedger hoists up Frost and slams his body to the mat with a loud thud. The crowd reacted and so did Driedger. Having dropped into Frost’s guard Driedger postured way up and drops 3 meteors in the guise of right fists and then climbs into half guard and plants left elbows to Frosts chest which cause him to bend up into a triangle held till the horn.

Round 2
Begins with Driedger catching Frost with a hard straight right then Frost retaliates with a nice over hand right that knocks a few skin cells loose on Driedger’s chin. Frost puts Driedger on the fence and lays in with right and left hooks as Driedger delivers up a few nasty knees with a dirty boxing hand hold. Frost drops in for a double leg take down and crawls into the guard of Driedger. Frost makes good on his work ethic and ground and pounds with punches, elbows and hammer fist to Driedger’s face. Frost stands up and dives back into the guard of Driedger. Frost, while delivering left punches and hammer fists, moved to half guard and while  attempting to get to side control, Driedger drags Frost over and reverses onto the back of Frost. Driedger pops in the hooks, sinks in the rear naked choke, and as he begins his squeeze the horn sounds.

Round 3
Driedger’s turn to fling the roundhouse kick to nowhere that brought laughter and cheers from the crowd. Frost comes in looking to end it. He throws lots of left jabs followed by a good mix of right hooks, crosses and left and right leg kicks. Driedger took better than he gave during the exchange looking content to weather the storm and counter when the opportunity presented itself. A right leg kick caught by Driedger and a follow up straight right ass to the mat punch in the face of Frost evened the score in the round so far. Frost allowed to stand was burning, both fighters went for a finishing knock out punch and  swung a few wild ones. Fighters clinched against the fence and trade a few tight knees and short elbows. They break and dance a little toe to toe in center ring with Driedger landing the most in the trade of rights hooks, leg kicks and finally a clinch with a hard left body shot into Frost’s rib cage to end the round.

Fight 7
Derek “Mad Dog” Medler vs Jared “the Milkman” Milko

Round 1
Toe to toe in the middle of the ring is where this tilt begins with both fighter landing hard right leg kicks, jabs and rights that hit facial bone. They fight their way into a clinch and Medler trips Milko and attains a position in Milko’s half guard. Medler transitions to the back of Milko all the time dropping hard left hooks and hammer fists. Medler with both hooks in a attempting to sink a full naked choke gets bucked off by Milko who quickly stands up and throws a few short left upper cuts as Medler rises. On his feet, Medler grabs Milko by an arm and his head and hip flips Milko hard to the mat, crouches into Milko’s half guard and drops bone jarring elbows to the face followed by mind numbing right punches to the head. Medler climbs into a full mount and Milko escapes out the back door and rises at the horn.

Round 2
Medler comes after Milko and lands a big right to Milko’s cheek. Milko counters with a flurry of combinations, all blocked by Medler until Milko lands a hard straight right to the face of Medler and comes in for a clinch that Medler turns into a trip to the mat with both fighters going down. They quickly regain their feet and meet for in close battle once more. A flurry of rights and lefts culminate in a hard left hook by Medler that drops Milko to the mat. Medler jumps into the guard of Milko, lands extreme punishment with elbows, and hammer fists as he transitions onto Milko’s exposed back. Medler gets both hooks in then lands a few face softening wallops to Milko’s face. Medler works in the arm and cinches up a rear naked choke for the tap out at  3:20 of the second round.

Fight 8
Andrew Buckland vs David “Showtime” Perron

Round 1
Perron introduces Buckland to his right foot to the head as the round opens. They clinch and trip themselves to the mat. Both fighters pop back up to their feet and trade some leather in combos that that both fighter’s connect with. Back into a clinch, Perron trips Buckland to the mat and gets on his back. Getting in a hook, Perron tries to free his wrist from Buckland’s grasp as Buckland breaks free and stands up. Perron reaches up and yanks Buckland back into the guard. Buckland complies and from Perron’s guard lands nice hammer fist and straight lefts and rights. End of round.

Round 2
A little more tentative in the first few seconds of this round, the fighter’s circle and kick at each others legs. Buckland runs in for a takedown, succeeding with a trip that allows Buckland to stack Perron up on the fence and lay in with a few rights to the body and face. Perron works his way to right himself and uses the fence to regain his feet only to be dropped again by a vicious right knee and guillotine drag down from Buckland.  Tap out.

Fight 9
Nick “The Juggernaut” Hinchliffe vs Ryan Machan

Round 1
The fight starts in the middle of the mat with both fighters landing bombs. Machan with four wicked straight rights and Hinchliffe with some mean leg kicks and hard left jabs that were setting up an overhand right that threatened to end the fight just as it begun. The toe to toe goes on as Machan regains his senses and shoots for a double leg tak down that Hinchliffe stuffs and while allowing Machan to stand connects with another overhand right. The trades intensify as both fighters throw jabs and hard straight right punches. Hinchliffe seems to have the timing of Machan and counters effectively with straight rights to the jab and right hook of Machan. Hinchliffe lands a thunderous overhand right to end the first round.

Round 2
The fighters meet in the middle to exchange their knowledge in the form of hard straight rights and left jabs. Hinchliffe lays in some nasty head kicks from his right and throws in a few left jabs followed by hard right hooks. Machan, not to be outclassed by Hinchliffe’s precision, waded in with left jabs, right crosses and some nasty inside leg kicks of his own. One of these kicks went errantly into the groin of Hinchliffe and went unnoticed by the Ref. Continuing on with the fight, Hinchliffe approaches Machan only to be met with a flurry starting with Machan throwing a hard left jab followed by a straight right and a shoot to a two leg take down by Machan to end the round.

Round 3
The war continues with both fighters coming out hard and landing great rights. They circle each other landing punches and countering combinations. Hinchliffe using his quick left jab to both set up and distract Machan  The intensity of the fight gained momentum when most would be slowing down. The cardio of the fighters was phenomenal and the action never diminished. Both fighters kept coming into the middle of the mat and exchanged kicks and punches from all angles – the worst of which were the searing right leg kicks that Hinchcliffe landed on Machan’s lower left leg and Hinchliffe’s relentless jab right cross combo that scored over and over. The round ended with both fighters throwing bombs and landing kicks. the round ends.

Fight 10
Sarah Kaufman vs Megumi Yabushita
Round 1
Starts with both fighters trading nasty jabs and rights with a spinning right backfist into nothing by Yabushita. Kaufman, using her jab to close the gap, moves into Yabushita and lands jab after jab setting up a nasty right that wobbles Yabushita who regains composure quickly and throws a few right leg kicks and looping right punches into Kaufman’s direction to no avail. Kaufman turns up the heat with a 1-2 combo of jab and straight right time after time with good counters by Yabushita. Kaufman lands two stiff straight rights, stuffs an attempt by Yabushita to shoot in for a two leg take down and lets her up. Kaufman lands a succession of combos and avoids most of Yabushita’s hard swings especially an overhand right that was a sleeping pill Kaufman ducked. Yabushita connected with good hard right and left body shots  now and than. Kaufman absorbed them and plants a straight right kick on Yabushita’s tough chin to end the first round.

Round 2
The kicks and punches continue with Kaufman leading the parade. A looping right kick by Yabushita was caught by Kaufman and Yabushita paid for it at the end of Kaufman’s straight  left. Yabushita was game and tried to stand her ground. The intense onslaught of Kaufman’s combinations that did not abate brought the crowd to their feet. A night that did not really need another hero got one. It was a well fought round by Yabushita and she landed a few hurting right hooks and slammed a straight left home. She showed her toughness stayed in the match up and gave what she had. Kaufman on the other hand was throwing everything in the fridge at Yabushita. It was knuckle sandwich night and Yabushita ate lots. Combination after combination of left jabs then right jab switching it up and planting hooks from both sides and hurting leg and body kicks that took a toll on Yabushita. The round ended with Kaufman teeing off with left uppercuts to Yabushitas chin, I counted 7.

Round 3
Was a clinic of left jab and right punches. Kaufman continued the pressure with scoring combinations and left leg kicks that punished Yabushita. There was no escape as Kaufman landed strikes to both side of Yabushita’s face with a never ending pounding of left jabs right hooks and right crosses. At one point, the pressure was so intense that Yabushita had to dash away only to turn and brace for more ruination. Kaufman forces Yabushita into the fence and  onto the mat where she literally punches Yabushita to her feet with left hooks and continues to punch her back down towards the mat with more when the ref jumps in and stops the fight. TKO due to strikes at 3:34 of the 3rd round. Kaufman stole the night and made a lot of fans. Huge amount of cheers for the queen of Victoria.
