MMA: The Reckoning Play by Play


Ontario’s first ever legalized MMA event was held tonight at the scenic Casinorama in Orillia, Ontario. MMA will have its first legalized chance to show fight fans why it’s the world’s fastest growing sport. Being this is a historic event, it’s fitting that some of Canada’s youngest and brightest talent will be on display. Top prospects such as Dewsberry, Cirkunov, Cherdivara and Solomon are sprinkled throughout the card. While young talented veterans such as Horodecki and Mein will cap off the night. For the first legalized time in Ontario “Let’s get it on!”

Brandt Dewsbery vs. Joel Powell
Rd1: Both men circle tentatively to start off the round. Powell connects with a right overhand that stings Dewsbery. Dewsbery retaliates with a nice jab, over hand body kick combo. Powell uses the opening to land the double leg and puts Dewsbery on his back. Powell pushes Dewsbery up against the fence and rains down some vicious GnP. Dewsbery is doing a good job keeping his legs and hips high and protecting himself from damage. Powell passes to side control, but the opening allows Dewsbery back to his feet. Powell attempts an ugly standing guillotine that Dewsbery easily escapes. The fighters bring the crowd to their feet standing toe to toe for the final 10 seconds

Rd2: Dewsbery starts off the round leg kicking Powell. Powell tries to time the overhand but can’t connect. Both men stand and trade and Powell lands a nice right overhand on Dewsbery’s chin. Powell once again lands the double leg and puts Dewsbery on his back. Powell, standing over Dewsbery, has a tough time striking through Dewsbery’s legs. Powell continues to try and stack Dewsbery but can’t land any meaningful strikes. Powell passes to half guard and finally starts his onslaught. Powell finally gets some shots through that has Dewsbery turning and covering up. Powell jumps his back and cinches in the rear naked choke toearn the first ever legal MMA victory in Ontario.

Misha Cirkunov vs. Ion Cherdivara

Misha Cirkunov vs. Ion Cherdivara
Rd1: Cirkunov comes out kicking attempting leg, front and head kicks. The men finally clinch after a punch attempt by Cirkunov. Both men are trying to throw the other but no one can get the upper hand. The men finally separate with Misha unleashing some powerful combos. Ion is able to back out of Misha’s punching range fairly easily. Cirkunov finally traps Cherdivara against the cage and works hard for a trip takedown but Cherdivara’s balance is too good. Ion attempts a kick but gets caught by two overhands courtesy of Misha. Back in the clinch, Misha is finally able to throw Ion to the mat but Cherdivara is right back up. Misha jumps Ion’s back but gets thrown to the ground for his troubles. Ion dives on Cirkunov just as the round ends.

Rd2: Ion looks for the overhand but Misha ducks out of the way and the men tie up. Cirkunov has Cherdivara pinned against the fence while driving his knee into Cherdivara’s thigh. Cherdivara uses leg kicks to keep Cirkunov at bay. Cirkunov starts to counter the leg kicks with overhand 1,2 combos. Cirkunov lands a right hook on Cherdivara that seems to slow the Moldovian. Cirkunov again catches Cherdivara with an overhand but Cherdivara continues to circle the cage. A very boring round as every time Cherdivara throws a punch he runs and circles, Cirkunov continues to catch him with the hook but doesn’t have enough power to put Cherdivara away. The round ends under a vast amount of boos from the fans.

Rd3: Cherdivara immediately starts circling as Cirkunov catches him with another overhand. Cirkunov clinches up and delivers knees to Cherdivara’s midsection. Both seem very fatigued and continue to clinch. They separate and Misha continues to stalk Cherdivara around the ring. Cirkunov lands a nice teep kick that pushes Cherdivara against the cage. Cherdivara continues to circle while munching on Cirkunov’s jab. Cirkunov tries to bull rush Cherdivara with punches but again Ion circles away. Cirkunov finally ducks under, lands the double leg and takes mount. Cherdivara gives his back to avoid Misha’s punches. Cirkunov works hard to flatten out Cherdivara but hears the 10 second warning and finishes the fight with some GNP to the turtled Cherdivara.

A victorious Jason Saggo

Jason Saggo vs. Taylor Solomon
Rd1: Solomon stings Saggo early with a jab. Solomon stalking Saggo around the ring lands and uppercut but Saggo body locks and attempts to drag Solomon down. Solomon defends well and Saggo eats a knee. Solomon breaks free and chases Saggo around the ring throwing like crazy. Saggo ducks under, grabs the double and puts Solomon on his back. Saggo passes to mount from side control and starts to rain down some GnP. Solomon uses the fence to push off and reverse Saggo to his feet only to be dragged back down to the mat again by Saggo. Saggo lands in half guard and attempts to pass but Solomon escapes back to his feet. Saggo attempts a brief standing guillotine but Solomon escapes. Both fighters on their feet exchanging head kicks, Solomon sees the opening and returns the favor by putting Saggo on his back. The round ends before Solomon can initiate an offense.

Rd2: Saggo throws a nice kick to Solomon’s midsection. Saggo connects with an overhand and takes Solomon back down to the mat. Solomon is quick and is right back to his feet but Saggo catches him off balance and returns him to the canvas. Saggo passes to mount but can’t land any shots because Solomon is doing a great job covering up. Saggo, bored of trying to throw through Solomon’s arms, decides instead to take one home with him and transitions to an arm bar. Solomon looks for an escape can’t find one and taps.

Dean Amasinger vs. Matt MacGrath
Rd1: MacGrath pressures Amasinger against the fence. MacGrath lands a nice leg kick. Amasinger reverses MacGrath against the fence and does some thigh damage with his knees. MacGrath ducks under a combo from Amasinger and shoots in and lands the double. Amasinger is able to make it back to his feet before MacGrath can land any damage. Amasinger attempts a throw and both men fall to the mat, neither can capitalize and the round ends when they make it back to their feet.

Rd2: Amasinger comes out with a superman punch but misses. MacGrath ties up and drags Amasinger down to the mat. MacGrath lands in side control and starts to work him over with hammer fists. MacGrath tries to pass to mount, Amasinger turns and MacGrath has his back. Amasinger is able to reverse MacGrath and winds up in MacGrath’s guard. Amasinger lands some vicious elbows and passes to half guard. Amasinger postures up and gets caught by an up kick from MacGrath, Matt uses this to return to his feet. MacGarth drops for a single, misses and comes back up with an uppercut. MacGrath pressures against the fence again and lands the double. MacGrath really working the elbows from guard bouncing Amasinger’s head off the canvas like a bongo.

Rd3: Both men still look fresh and trade leg kicks and jabs. MacGarth finds the single and spins Amasinger to the mat. MacGarth again working some solid elbows from half guard. A very boring 3 minutes ensue, Amasinger does a good job tying up MacGrath so all we get is MacGrath using shoulder strikes and knees to the body. MacGarth picks it up when he hears the 10 second warning and finishes the round landing some short punches.

Rob Hill vs. Spencer Rohovie
Rd1: Hill starts off with two nice hard leg kicks. Rohovie lands a head kick but gets put on his back for his troubles. Hill quickly takes Rohovie’s back but Rohovie escapes back to his feet. Rohovie lands another solid body kick but again Hill pressures against the cage and trips him down to the canvas. Rohovie is able to fight back to his feet but again Hill takes him down. Rohovie bucks and reverses Hill but can’t keep him on the mat. Rohovie jumps guard possibly looking for a triangle but Hill throws him to the mat. Hill eats four hard up kicks from Rohovie and backs away. Rohovie up and looking for a kick but slips and falls to the mat. Again Rohovie is up and looking for Hill but runs right into a Hill right that puts him back on the mat.

Rd2: Hill comes out first and puts the pressure on Rohovie with punches. Rohovie returns the favor with a jab, body shot and body kicks. Rohovie throws a kick, Hill catches it and throws Rohovie to the mat. Hill lands some brutal shots and jumps on top of Rohovie. Hill easily cinches in the arm triangle, Rohovie bucks to escape but to no avail and taps out.

Jason Young vs. Jorge Brito
Rd1: Young comes out strong and throws Brito to the mat. Young lands some solid punches before Brito makes it back to his feet. Brito pressuring Young against the cage, unleashes two powerful hooks to Young’s chin. Young just misses with a round house kick. Brito capitalizes and lands a right overhand that drops Young. Brito hesitates before jumping onto Young. Brito jumps into Young’s half guard and lands some solid hammer fists. Young is able to make it back to his feet and drops Brito with an overhand of his own. At the 10 second warning, Brito locks up an omoplata and looks for the straight arm bar as the round ends.

Rd2: Young lands a nice knee from the Thai plum to start the round off. Young buckles Brito leg with a kick and really lands hard with an overhand right. Brito unfazed is able to bring Young to the canvas with a double leg. Again Young buckles Brito’s leg with a kick and floors him with a head kick. Young let’s Brito up and again works the leg kicks which are really taking their toll. Brito still in it lands a double that puts Young on his back. Back on their feet Brito attempts to pull guard but Young throws him down to the mat.

Rd3: Both fighters come out swinging with Young looking a little fresher, again Young attacks the lead leg of Brito with kicks. Young lands four overs hands on Brito’s head in a row. Wow, Brito can take a shot. Brito looking very tired with Young landing at will to the body and head. Young is really digging into Brito’s left rib cage. Brito, tired of being hit, ties up but cannot capitalize. Brito drops down and looks for the single but Young falls on top of him and looks for the triangle from top but Brito escapes. Brito pulls guard again and again Young’s throws him to the mat. The round ends with a exhausted Brito looking for the Thai plum.

David Castillo vs. Chris Horodecki
Rd1: Castillo lands a leg kick and Horodecki lands the overhand that bullies Castillo to the ground. Horodecki lands in Castillo’s guard and works some nice punches and hammer fists. Castillo turns to escape but gives his back and Horodecki jumps right on and cinches in the RNC for the tap out win.

Burkman picks up Mein

Josh Burkman vs. Jordan Mein
Rd1: Mein popping in an out of the pocket landing jabs to the body and face of Burkman. Burkman using lots of kicks to Mein’s body and legs. Burkman catches Mein with a vicious right hook that bloodies Mein’ nose. Mein continues to use his reach to beat Burkman to the punch. Burkman just misses a ducking Mein with flying knee. The round ends with Burkman eating a Mein jab.

Rd2: Mein comes out and switches back and forth between southpaw and regular stance. Mein flurries on Burkman who lands a hook on Mein that wobbles him. Mein backs up, lands a nice combo, and side steps a rushing Burkman. Burkman misses with an overhand right and Mein makes him pay with a left jab right hook to the face that wobbles Burkman. Burkamn retaliates by scoop slamming Mein to the mat. Mein fights his way back to his feet. Burkman pressuring Mein against the fence but Mein defends the takedown well. Burkman’s jab is starting to get through on Mein. The round ends with Mein eating to jabs.

Rd3: Mein lands another good jab, hook combo and Burkman ties up. Mein pushes Burkman up against the fence. Burkman looks for the Thai plum but Mein flurries to his body and escapes. Both men starting to throw, Mein’s reach is allowing him go get the better of the exchanges. At the 10 second warning both men eat a spinning back fist from each other and slug it out until the bell sounds.

    ya it was an extremely close fight, and Burkman’s stand up was good. I can see how the judges gave Mein the decision but it was a close fight. At no time did either guy dominate the other

    Nice job on the PBP Big Win.

    Disagree with you on Mein fight, thought Jordan won round 1 decisively.

    But great job describing the action quickly.
