Best of 2010 – Submission of the Year

By:

Better late than never!  After a busy start to 2011, Top MMA News returns to its year end awards for 2010.

When considering who won the award,  Top MMA News used some criteria, in no particular order:

  1. The person performing the submission must be Canadian.
  2. Difficulty/rareness of the submission (Rear Naked Choke more common than a Twister)
  3. The level of competition  (eg. Bigger feat to submit GSP than it is to submit Keith Grienke)
  4. The importance of the fight  (eg. Sub in a UFC title fight more impressive than a sub in the opening fight of a local event)
  5. Someone from Top MMA News must see it – live or on video. (eg. Brad Cardinal Triangle Choked Musa Toliver on the undercard at MFC 27 but Top MMA News did not see this sub so it is out of the running)
  6. Professional fights only

Without any more words, here are the best submissions of 2010:

1. Jordan Mein subs Victor Bachmann by Neck Crank – Jordan Mein cranked it up in the first round of the Let’s Get It On MMA Welterweight tournament.  Mein, who was also named Top MMA News Prospect of the Year, seemed to turn Victor Bachmann’s head completely around with a painful Neck Crank.  Columnist Cody Rempel called it Exorcist-like in his recap. (Here is the recap)

2. Mark Bocek subs Dustin Hazelett by Triangle Choke – A loss at UFC 124 and Mark Bocek could have been released from the big leagues.  Instead, Bocek put on a clinic on a BJJ clinic.  He tore through black belt Dustin Hazelett’s rubber guard and got mount where he quickly slipped on a Triangle.  Bocek quickly declared that he had the best jiu-jitsu in the UFC Lightweight division.  Who can disagree after that performance?

3. Mark Hominick subs Bryan Caraway by Triangle Arm Bar – Mark Hominick had lost his first two WEC fights and was signed for a second run at the WEC.  A loss against Bryan Caraway could have meant that the Machine and his underrated ground game would be quickly exiting the WEC.  Instead, Hominick submitted Caraway with a Triangle Arm Bar from his back.  The win was a big one for Top MMA News’ #2 Fighter of the Year and launched him towards his current title shot against Jose Aldo.

4. Garett Davis subs Ryan Chiappe by Anaconda Choke – The Welterweight title was on the line at KOTC Lock Down and Chiappe and Davis put on a great fight.  The back and forth contest finally ended in the third when Garett Davis put Chiappe to sleep in the third round to capture the title (here is the recap)

5. Joe Doerksen subs Tom Lawlor by Rear Naked Choke – El Dirte had not been in the UFC for two years and had a 1-5 record in the big show when he was invited back to face Tom Lawlor.  Another loss and one would think that Doerksen would never be invited back again.  Things did not look good in the first when Lawlor took it to the Winnipeg fighter, however, Doerksen clipped him in the standup in the second and then RNC’d him for the win.

Honourable Mentions (others receiving votes):

  • Luke Harris subs Ryan Ballingal by Inverse Triangle at Awada Combat Club
  • John Alessio subs Sergey Golyaev by Kimura at United Glory
  • Jonathan Belair subs Dave Depathie by Kimura with a hint of Triangle at MFL 3
  • Dwight Sutherland subs Guillaume Fortier by Triangle Choke at CFC 5
