Top MMA News made a pit stop in Laval, Quebec to witness and report Fight Quest: an amateur event on display at Billards Le Skratch. This is an excellent opportunity to witness local talent and to get a glimpse into those who have a future in Pro MMA. The fans poured through the front door; all decked out in Tapout and Affliction and spared no moment to order beer by the pitcher. This was to be a rambunctious event. And it was.

Fight 1 (155-160lbs) : Ivan Rogic (Zahabi MMA) vs. Zak Ben Brahim (Juvaldo)
Round 1 : Both fighters meet at the centre of the ring and exchange a few leg kicks. Rogic bullies his opponent in the corner and gets an over-under hooks. He nearly takes his opponent down but Ben Brahim holds onto the ropes which draws complaints from coach Firas Zahabi. They keep the same position but move toward the other side of the ring. Once again Ben Brahim uses the ropes to stay on his feet but this time the ref warns him. Rogic is able to get the takedown and immediately mounts his opponent. He lands a few punches before the round comes to a halt.

Round 2 : The round begins and the Zahabi student lands a right hook on his opponent. They clinch in the corner where Rogic grabs a single leg but once again Ben Brahim is grabbing the ropes. The fighters separate and Ben Brahim lands a crushing right cross followed by a left uppercut as the bell rings.

Round 3 : Rogic starts the round fatigued and pays for it by eating successive right-left combinations. He is losing the standup battle and decides to shoot for the takedown. Ben Brahim stuffs the takedown and reverses his opponent. Ben Brahim wastes no time and lands a stiff right hand followed by hammer fists. The Juvaldo protégé passes into side mount and the round ends.

Fight 2 (190lbs) : Kevin Dellow (Zahabi MMA) vs. Jordan Turcotte (Force Xtreme)

Round 1 : High kick thrown by Dellow grazes Turcotte’s face. The fighters clinch and a scramble ensues the result of which benefits Dellow who mounts Turcotte. Turcotte tries to escape but gives his back. The Zahabi student quickly works a rear naked choke. After some adjustments the submission is locked in and forces his opponent to tap.

Fight 3 (145-150lbs) : Mo Yang (Zahabi MMA) vs. (Brian Sandaga (Ara Academy)
Round 1 : Sandaga throws a leg kick but Yang responds by dashing forward with a series of rights and lefts some of which make their way through. Sandaga throws a superman punch but eats a right hook for his troubles. Yang muscles Sandaga into the ropes, picks his opponent up and slams him onto the canvas. The round ends with Yang in Sandaga’s half guard.

Round 2: Yang takes the centre of the ring and stuffs a takedown attempt by Sandaga. They scramble from the clinch and Yang ends up in mount. Yang delivers some good ground and pound. Feeling fancy, Yang switches to an S guard hoping to get a triangle choke from mount but this offers the opportunity for Sandaga to escape by the back door. Unfortunately for Sandaga, he gets forced back onto his back and Yang wastes no time unleashing a fury of punches. The ref decides to stop the fight with only seconds to spare before the end of the round.
Mo Yang wins by TKO at 1:58 in the 2nd round.

Fight 4 (HW) : Chris Tinkler (Team Rudeboy) vs. Tyler Hawkney (Push MMA)
Round 1 : Both fighters come out swinging hard and the pace would rival that of a lightweight fight. Hawkney lands a hard right on his opponent but Tinkler lands a right hook in retribution. The two juggernauts kick it into fifth gear and are standing toe to toe. It is difficult to determine who is getting the better of the exchanges. Tinkler appears to land a few more shots than his opponent in the later part of the round.

Round 2 : Hawkney starts the round off with a jab and Tinkler advances with a flurry of punches and clinches his opponent but lets go. Tinkler connects with three successive thudding right leg kicks that resonate throughout the room. He decides to shoot in on Hawkney but is stuffed. Hawkney finds a home for his slipping right hook and the round comes to an end. Tinkler is taking deep breaths.

Round 3 : Despite looking gassed in their corners, both heavyweights come out fighting like bantamweights. Hawkney throws a push kick and Tinkler answers back with a right hand that doesn’t seem to bother his opponent. Hawkney shoots in for a takedown but is reversed by his opponent and is then mounted. Tinkler wastes no time and throws powerful right hands on his opponent who turns to his side and turtles. The ref is hovering near the fighters and Hawkney gives us up his back. This doesn’t deter the Team Rudeboy fighter who continues to pound on his opponent. The ref stops the fight at 1:32 of round 3. Great fight!

Fight 5 (135-140lbs) : Kevin Chauvette (Ultimaction) vs. Kirk Paradis (Juvaldo)
Round 1 : The round seems like a feeling out process between the two. Kevin connects with a right hand and Kirk responds with a leg kick. Kevin is undeterred and advances on his opponent and launches another right hand that stings Paradis. The fighters circle and exchange leg kicks. The round ends with Kevin landing a jab-right hook combination.

Round 2 : Paradis decides to utilize his longer reach this round and throws a jab and right-hook combo that connects before circling away. Chauvette decides to throw a right kick but his rival blocks it effortlessly. Kirk is really in his element and is dictating the fight with his reach and foot movement. Chauvette senses the round is coming to an end and attempts a takedown but is unsuccessful.

Round 3 : Chauvette decides to rush his opponent to get in the pocket as soon as the round starts. He seems to want no part of the cat and mouse game. He then lands a leg kick and follows it up with a straight right. Paradis throws a high kick that grazes his opponent. He attempts it a second time but Chauvette anticipates this move and takes Paradis down. Paradis is working a high guard and Kevin lands nothing before the round ends.

The official decision is a unanimous decision win for Kevin Chauvette which draws a few boos from the crowd who felt it was undeserving.

Fight 6 (160lbs) : Sylvain Paquette (Zahabi MMA) vs. Ricardo Moreau (Kanreikai)
Round 1 : Paquette seemed to have brought an army with him because the crowd is chanting his name. Moreau throws an overhand right that misses and rushes his opponent into the ropes. They both clinch and Moreau attempts a shoulder throw but misses and is then on his back and mounted. Paquette aggressively throws some right hands. Moreau grimaces and gives his back. The crowd is roaring and demands a stoppage. Paquette picks his shots and the ref is forced to intervene.
Sylvain Paquette wins by TKO at 1:50 in round 1 and the crowd broke some municipal sound laws.

Fight 7 (155bs) : Patrick Lafleur (Zahabi MMA) vs. Samuel Desruisseaux (Ultimaction)
Round 1 : Fighters meet at the centre and Lafleur absorbs a leg kick. Lafleur follows it up with a right leg head kick but Desruisseaux catches the leg, rushes his opponent and takes him down near the ropes. The ref recentres the fighters and they are in Lafleur’s guard. Lafleur instantly works the up and over sweep but Desruisseaux bases. Pat grabs a hold of his opponent’s arm and switches his hips for an armbar. The lock is in tight and Lafleur is propping his hips up with all his might. Desruisseaux finally taps. His right arm seems to be broken as he isn’t able to move it attended by the medical crew.

Fight 8 (HW) : Vladimir Starcencov (Zahabi MMA) vs. Ike Chiplick
Round 1 : This fight comes to an abrupt conclusion when the hulking Russian connects with a jaw breaking straight right. Chiplick fell asleep before he hit the floor.

Fight 9 (165lbs) : Bruno-Pierre Dubois (Juvaldo) vs. Mike Bullock (Push MMA)
Round 1: Bullock shoots in but is unable to get the takedown and the fighters clinch. The fighters break but Dubois wastes no time and lands a push kick on his opponent. Dubois lands a stiff right hand that makes Bullock fall to the canvas. Dubois pounces on his opponent by cupping underneath his head and pumps powerful punches on the noggin. The ref stops the fight.
Bruno-Pierre Dubois wins by TKO at 1:10 of round 1

Fight 10 (135lbs) : Neil Sheppard (Zahabi MMA) vs. Mick Dufort (St-Jean FC)
Round 1: Neil initiates the exchanges by throwing a right cross and a right high kick. They fighters tie up and scramble. They land in Dufort’s guard but he quickly attacks with a guillotine choke. The fighters roll incessantly and Dufort transitions from mount, to guard, to mount and finally guard without ever letting go of the choke. He is relentlessly holding onto the choke and adjusting it inch by inch. Dufort’s efforts pay off as he forces the tap late in the first round.

Fight 11 ( 185lbs) : Ian Perron (Zahabi MMA) Emmanuel Crevier (Evolution)
Round 1: Both fighters take the centre of the ring and test each other out. Ian lands two legs kick. He then throws a right kick that is partially blocked by Crevier who responds by shooting in on his opponent. Perron defends the takedown but Crevier muscles him into the corner. Crevier holds onto a single leg and gets the takedown and into Perron’s guard. Too little too late as the round instantly ends.

Round 2 : The round starts and Perron throws a kick to the body and follows it up a left kick to the same area that simply grazes Crevier who immediately rushes his opponent with a flurry of straights and hooks. Perron parries the attack and drops Crevier with a straight right. Crevier recovers by holding onto Perron’s leg. Perron gets free and gets stays on top of his opponent who is now on his knees. Perron lands some hammer fists and Crevier finds a way to stand back up.

Round 3 : The Zahabi student starts the round off the same with a kick followed by a left hand. Perron suddenly drops his opponent with a right hook. He pounces on his vulnerable opponent and gets his back. He is unable to get the rear naked choke despite being very close.

Top MMA News’ submission of the night was Patrick Lafleur with the armbar from guard.

Top MMA News’ knockout of the night was an obvious choice. Vladimir Starcencov gets the nod with one of the most powerful straight rights I ever witnessed.

Top MMA News’ fight of the night is awarded to Chris Tinkler and Tyler Hawkney. Both fighters pushed a fast pace throughout the entire fight and chewed on some bombs.

  1. Just two quick corrections (the program made it a bit confusing, I take responsibility for the mix up). Chris Tinkler beat Tyler Hawkney (Tinkler was the mountain of a man with a mustache) and Vlad Stacencov beat Ike Chiplick. James Chalice was supposed to fight Bruno-Pierre Dubois, but broke his hand the day before. The Chazmanian Devil was attendng the show with a cast on.
