Alessio Loses Shot at Ultimate Glory

John Alessio announced today via his twitter account that due to a back injury he has been forced to withdraw from the Ultimate Glory Welterweight tournament.

“Well I have bad news people…I’m out of my next fight jan 30 (semifinals of tourney) with an injury, to much pain to train or fight”

The exact details of how the injury occurred were unavailable at the time of writing and Alessio himself has not returned any text messages sent by Top MMA News. Top MMA News did speak with Alessio yesterday, who was very happy to hear he’d came in second in the 2010 Canadian fighter of the year poll; “Wow that’s great! I’m honoured !!! Thanks so much.” However, Alessio did not mention any injury at the time.

Alessio earned his semifinals spot in the Ultimate Glory tourney by defeating Sergey Golyaev via Kimura this past October. Most recently, Alessio defeated Phil Collins via TKO to capture the Tachi Palace Fights Welterweight title.

Withdrawing from the Ultimate Glory tourney has to be extra sour for Alessio, as it was his contractual obligation to the tournament that caused him to turn down a UFC deal (which is Alessio’s ultimate goal) this past November. Alessio did seem optimistic as to his pending return, which he also commented on via Twitter;

“… will recover soon I hope to fight in a few months”
