UFC 124 Main Event Breakdown

After a stacked with Canadians preliminary card (see prelim breakdown), Montreal gets down to business with Georges St-Pierre vs Koscheck and the rest of the main card. Here are Top MMA News’ writers prediction on the main card fights:

Georges St-Pierre 6 vs. Josh Koscheck 0
Cody – GSP has stated that he wants to get back to finishing fights and this is where he’s going to start. I predict that GSP is going to take the fight to the ground and pound him out in the second round for the TKO victory.

Derek – While both fighters have been better since first meeting back in 2007. GSP has been one of the world’s best. The difference between the two is bjj where GSP has the advantage. While he has been training with Freddie Roach, I think GSP will use his ground skills to pull an armbar submission in the 3rd round.

Don – GSP controls the fight on the ground and submits Kos in the 3rd probably by keylock.

Marc – GSP is going to MAUL Koshchek and end him with a vicious KO/TKO

Sebastien – GSP will TKO Koscheck in the third round with Freddie Roach’s tutelage being the lurking variable. There’s a reason why Freddie predicted a knockout via left hook. He obviously sees the damage GSP is capable of delivering with that technique.

Benoit – GSP by submission in the fifth. After beating the spirit out of Koscheck, he’ll snatch a limb and finish the work.

Thiago Alves 6 vs. John Howard 0
Cody – Alves needs a win in addition to a successful weight cut to remain relevant in the UFC’s Welterweight division and I’m predicting both in this bout with Alves walking away with the hard fought decision win.

Derek – This all depends on one thing. If Alves has trouble cutting weight like he has in the past he will have trouble but he should grab a KO win in the 2nd.

Don – Alves will stay busier and win the striking to take a unanimous decision

Marc – Thiago Alves by TKO over Howard

Sebastien – Alves by TKO in the third. Howard’s explosiveness and quick start will give us the impression that he’s on his way to victory until he eats Alves’ knee later in the fight. Alves is simply the better striker and this fight won’t go to the ground.

Benoit – Alves by Split Decision. Howard is always an interesting dark horse to pick. Alves is too big, too strong to fall for Howard’s muscling style. The short welterweight is going to give him a run for his money though.

Stefan Struve 2 vs. Sean McCorkle 4
Cody – With only two decisions in a combined 34 career contests between these big Heavyweights I’m predicting third round submission victory for the towering Dutchman Struve.

Derek – We see size in this fight with height vs weight. While Struve’s height can be a big help it is his demise as well. Tall guys have trouble with someone who can pack some power and McCorkle has that. Give him a 1st round TKO.

Don – Struve’s experience will be his key to the win this night, Struve will get rocked by a McCorkle punch then submit “Big Sexy” off his back via triangle in the first.

Marc – Struve over McCorkle

Sebastien – McCorkle’s crusade over the internet will do very little for him in this fight. Struve’s long limbs will serve him well and trap McCorkle in a triangle choke in round 2.

Benoit – McCorkle by TKO in the second. Struve can’t use his size for striking if his life would depend on it. McCorkle is a ginormous, interesting prospect.

Charles Oliveira 4 vs Jim Miller 2
Cody – The winner of this should move one step closer to a top ten ranking and into title contention my pick is for the more experienced Jim Miller to eke out a split decision win.

Derek – This has some great potential to be a fight of the night with two rising stars in the Lightweight division. While both seem evenly matched I think speed will be the difference for Oliveira to get rear naked choke in round 2.

Don – Oliveira will out strike Miller en route to a unanimous decision.

Marc – Oliviera over Jim Miller by Decision

Sebastien – Miller’s combination of wrestling and jiu jitsu will stifle anything Oliveira has to offer him. I like Oiveira but he will lose via unanimous decision.

Benoit – Oliveira by KO in the first. Oliveira is too fast, too well rounded for Miller. It’s going to be over soon and it’s going to be awesome. Hopefully another Perfect Plex against the cage.

Joe Stevenson 6 vs Mac Danzig 0
Cody – Joe Daddy looked impressive in his first two outings after joining the Jackson’s camp in Albuquerque he hit a bump in the road in streaking George Sotiropoulos. Look for Stevenson to regain his form and take a unanimous decision win.

Derek – There is a reason that Danzig has lost 4 of his last 5. I think Stevenson will use his wrestling skills to win by decision

Don – Stevenson controls Danzig on the ground and wins a unanimous decision.

Marc – Stevenson over Danzig by Sub

Sebastien – Stevenson is simply better than Danzig in every aspect of fighting. Big Daddy will land some punches and do enough on the ground to earn himself a decision win (unanimous).

Benoit – Stevenson by Unanimous Decision. Both grapplers lack explosiveness. Stevenson will most likely control Danzig from the top and win a decent glorified grappling match.
