Top MMA News was at the SUMMUM amateur MMA event in Brossard this Saturday, November 27th “Le Skratch” billiards hall and sports bar restaurant. The venue was a fairly tight area and managed to squeeze in a few hundred casual MMA fans who, for the most part, came to cheer on their friends and family. Should anyone ever decide to go and enjoy their food, may I suggest the “Le Skratch burger” that serves a mastodon sized beef patty covered in peppercorn gravy.
Top MMA News chose Mohammed Sylvia as the winner of the Knockout of the Night award. He gets the nod simply because he is the only fighter to finish his fight via TKO.
The Fight of the Night award goes to Jonathan Pivin and Zander McComber. This fight had slams, crushing right crosses, submission attempts and sweeps! A battle in which Pivin displayed an enormous heart and won over the hearts of many who attended.
Top MMA News chose Robin Helou as the winner of the Submission of the Night award. His transition from ground and pound in from mount to an armbar was a nice display of technique that would have made any Gracie proud.
Robin Helou vs. Charles Vermette
Round 1 : Charles Vermette cannot contain his excitement and is told by the referee to get back into his corner. Fighters meet in the centre of the ring where Helou shoots but Vermette sprawls. Vermette goes for an anaconda choke but Helout defends soundly. Vermette bullies Helou onto his back and obtains sidemount. Vermette wastes no time to mount and unleashes some ground and pound. Helou turns to his side but forgets to protect his arm. Vermette snatches the arm and applies a textbook Arm Bar. Vermette’s excitement appears to be contagious as the crowd erupts in jubilation.

Remy Bussieres vs. Enock Blanchette
Round1: Both fighters rush each other and throw punches but Blanchette gets the better of the early exchanges with some right uppercuts. Blanchette gets taken down by Remy from an inside leg trip. The fighters are in Blanchette’s guard and Remy is lands a few nice right hands to the face of Blanchette. Bussieres improves his position to half guard. A scramble ensues and Bussieres takes Blanchette’s back. Enock forces his way back to his feet and the round ends with both fighters clinching.

Round 2: A jab launched by Remy almost finds his mark and Enock lands some punches in return but neither fighter gets seriously tagged. Both fighters clinch and pushed against the ring. Bussieres tries to take Blanchette down but ends up on his back. Bussieres is able to quickly recover by forcing a scramble and ends up taking Blanchette’s back. Bussieres hunts for a rear naked choke and sinks it. Blanchette prepares for the tap before Bussieres fully applies the choke. Blanchette is forced to tap in the second round.

Kevin Pellerin vs. Vincent Houle
Round 1: Houle lands an inside leg kick. Superman punch missed by Houle but manages to clinch and hip throw Pellerin to the mat. Kevin spends little time on the canvas and finds a way back to his feet. Houle guns for another judo style takedown by attempting a shoulder throw however Pellerin defends nicely. Fighters size each other up some more and Houle lands one last right leg kick as the round comes to an end.

Round 2: Both fighters believe to have found their range and charge each other at the sound of the bell. The fighters clinch and throw some uppercuts and short punches from the clinch. They each take their turns in over-committing their punches and fall. Both fighters get up to resume the clinch game. Fighters separate and Pellerin lands a leg kick. The round is marked by a large amount of clinch work with unimpressive punches from both fighters in that position. Houle bullies Pellerin onto the ropes and Pellerin’s back is arched over the ropes. He appears to have slightly injured himself as he cries in pain seconds before the bell rings. The ref asks Pellerin is he’s ok and Pellerin insists he’s ok.

Round 3: Body kick followed by a right hand lands for Pellerin. Houle takes Pellerin down but is immediately paying for his attempt as Pellerin is locking up an armbar. Houle defends and Pellerin lets go. Pellerin played coy because in a split second attempts a second armbar. Once again Pellerin lets go but the story of the round is the close Arm Bar attempts by Pellerin.

Matt Demore vs. Olivier Aubin-Mercier
Round 1: Demore lands a good leg kick early on. Olivier does not like it and rushes the Team Shredder student to take him down. Demore defends the takedown at first but is eventually taken down due to Olivier’s persistence, however Demore stands right back up. Demore lands some left hooks on Olivier and is looking sharper on the feet. Demore also lands a nice sidekick that sends his opponent into the ropes. The fighters clinch and the fight goes to the ground. A scramble ensues and Olivier awkwardly applies a makeshift inverted triangle choke on Demore. Demore isn’t in any serious danger and is apparently able to breathe despite being held down and unable to escape. Olivier tries to attack an ankle from that position but the round ends.

Round 2: Olivier comes out and lands a right hand before taking Demore down, much to the fans’ delight. Olivier gets into Demore’s half guard and lands some short punches. The short punches aren’t enough to convince the referee and he stands them both up. Both fighters clinch however Olivier gets a high crotch lock, picks his foe up and slams him onto the mat. Olivier passes to half guard and tries for a Kimura but can’t finish it.

Round 3: Olivier rushes his opponent and lands some punches but this results in more clinching. The fighters separate briefly however Olivier shoots in for a double leg takedown and gets it but Demore muscles his way back. The fighters clinch again and Olivier gets a judo style hip throw. The fight then goes to Demore’s half guard and Olivier hunts for another Kimura. He lands a few more hard punches before we hear the bell.

Jonathan Pivin vs. Zander McComber
Round 1: Zander lands a missile of a right hand on Pivin as soon as they close the distance and this is followed up by a strong uppercut on Pivin as well. Pivin gets rocked by McComber but stays in the game and rushes his opponent in the corner. Zander breaks free and lands another strong right hand but Pivin acts like he eats them for breakfast. Zander decides to mix it up and slams Pivin to the canvas. The round ends in Pivin’s half guard. The crowd shows their appreciation for this action packed round.

Round 2: The round starts off where they left off when Zander slams his opponent onto the mats much like our country boy favorite Matt Hughes. Pivin displays his gamesmanship by switching his hips for an armbar. The arm is nearly stretched out but Zander pulls it out and retreats in a way that shows his respect for Pivin’s ground game. Zande lands a head kick that is partially blocked by Pivin. Zander shoots in for a double leg takedown and gets it. Pivin displays more ground prowess by executing an omoplata sweep and ends up in Zander’s half guard just as the round ends.

Round 3: Pivin clearly fired up in his corner and sports a Diaz brothers style mean face. Pivin lands a jab but Zander charges with a flurry on Pivin. Zander lands a hard switch kick to Pivin’s body but once again Pivin takes them. Zander lands a hard leg kick to Pivin and they clinch until the end of the round. The crowd erupts in glee from this action fight.

Steve Alix vs. Chris Schrauwen
Round 1: Alix lands a powerful leg kick of which the sound resonates throughout the room. Schrauwen decides to take his opponent down and gets half guard. A scrambles ensues and Schrauwen gets the better of it by taking Alix’s back and quickly attacking the neck. Alix cannot prevent the choke and is forced to tap early in the first round.
The Winner: Chris Schrauwen wins by submission (Rear Naked Choke) in the first round.
Guillaume Michel vs. Andrew Copeland
Round 1: Both fighters come out throwing some exchanges however nothing significant lands. Michel trips Copeland to the canvas and goes to half guard. Michel cruises his way to mount and unloands some quality ground n pound. Copeland gives up his back and Michel looks for an Arm Bar from the back before attacking the neck. Copeland manages to shrug Michel off like a bull and Michel lands on his feet. The round ends in a clinch.

Round 2: Michel throws a right kick to the body and Copeland lands a right hand at the same time. There is a lot of clinching in this round. Copeland manages to take Michel down and lands in side mount. However, Michel is able to reverse and lands in mount as the round ends.

Round 3: Both fighters start throwing with no accuracy in mind. They clinch and Michel trips Copeland to the ground. Copeland is able to sweep Michel however Michel gets back to his feet. Both fighters aare against the ropes and are looking for a takedown. The round comes to an end.

Vincent Laurendeau vs. Mohamed Sylvia
Round 1: The fight resembles a bar room brawl with wild wild punches being thrown with bad intentions. Sylvia catches Laurendeau early and has him retreating. Sylvia lands some nice uppercuts . Laurendeau to take Sylvia down but Sylvia lands on top. Laurendeau baits his opponent to pass and locks in a nice Knee Bar but is unable to make his opponent tap before the end of the round.

Round 2: Laurendeau goes for the takedown but is once again betrayed by his intentions and ends up on his back. Sylvia lands some vicious hammerfists from the standing position inside Laurendeau’s guard bu the ref warns him these are illegal in amateur MMA. The fight starts and this time Laurendeau pulls guard. This was proven to be a mistake since Sylvia lands some vicious ground and pound from the standing position. This time the blows are legal and he finishes Laurendeau with a TKO victory.
The winner: Mohammed Sylvia by TKO in the second round.
Joel Tessier vs. Mickael Dufort
Round 1: The round starts and the fighters immediately clinch. The fighters break away and a leg kick lands for Dufort. Dufort manages to take Tessier down and lands in half guard. Tessier bounces back up. Dufort lands two successive right hands. The round ends shortly after Tessier manages to take Dufort down but does very little damage before the sound of the bell.

Round 2: Tessier gets the takedown and lands in half guard. Dufort’s attempts for a sweep result in a scramble. The fighters find their way back to their feets where the clinching resumes. Dufort looks for a guillotine choke but it isn’t there. He attempts to make it tighter by pulling guard however the round ends.

Round 3: Both fighters start the round with newfound energy. Tessier clinches with Dufort who once again looks for a guillotine. Tessier decides to pick Dufort up and slam him however this seemingly helps Dufort’s attempt at tightening the Guillotine. Tessier is able to weather the storm however Dufort attempts an Arm Bar from bottom. Tessier locks his hands together to prevent the straightening of the arms. Dufort eventually lets go and finishes the round with an up and over sweep and mounts Tessier just as the round ends.
