TUF 12 – GSP vs Kos – Episode 9 Recap

By:

Jonathan Brookins

The semi-finals are on Episode 9.  Psycho Sako Chivitchian is taking on Jonathan Brookins.  Brookins beat Sako’s friend and training partner Sevak Magakian in the first round.  Nam Phan will take on Guillotine sensation Cody McKenzie.

Georges St-Pierre talks about tactical training.  He wants his fighters hungry when they enter the cage.   Koscheck focuses on Chivitchian keeping the fight standing and not giving up his back to a Rear Naked Choke.

Brookins is keeping his head on straight.  He just wants to ride his bike, go to the library, and pay his rent on time.

Jonathan Brookins vs Sako Chivitchian
R1. The two throw jabs to start out before Sako pushes Brookins against the cage. Brookins throws Chivitchian and gets his back. After methodically working at the RNC, Brookins finally locks it in and Chivitchian taps. Dana White calls Brookins “the real deal.” As Koscheck says, Brookins won the same way as he did against Magakian – same throw and same choke.
Jonathan Brookins submits Sako Chivitchian by Rear Naked Choke in Round 1

Brookins advances to the semi-finals. Now Nam Phan vs Cody Mckenzie is up next.

Mckenzie is a big believer in himself. The strategy against Phan, whose jits and standup is better, is putting Phan against the fence and then putting Phan onto his back.

Koscheck wants to see Mckenzie get his ass kicked as Cody likes to trash talk with him. Koscheck has the whole team attacking Phan’s neck with Guillotines. Phan is the intelligent fighter. He realizes Mckenzie is very dangerous, who does most techniques incorrectly, but very effectively.

Nam Phan vs Cody Mckenzie
R1. Cody waves off the hand tap once again. Mckenzie pushes Phan against the fence just like coach told him. Mckenzie, who has a huge reach and height advantage, works Phan over against the fence but cannot take him down in the first minute. A minute and a half in and Mckenzie takes him downs and lands some punches from top. Phan gets to his feet and misses a punch and kick. Cody listens to everything GSP says. Pushes him against the fence, throws knees when told. A minute left and the two are trading in the middle when Phan lands his first strikes and lands a very hard right. McKenzie shoots but Phan sprawls and punishes him with some elbows. Nice kick to the body by Mckenzie at the end. Mckenzie wins the round but is definitely the most tired fighter at the end of the round. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 Mckenzie

R2. Phan is the fresher fighter and comes out head hunting with a series of right head kicks that do not really connect. Then Mckenzie pushes Phan against the fence but Phan escapes. Phan starts landing some strikes and is winning the standup and the right high kick is landing now as well as several hard body shots. Phan is picking Mckenzie apart on the feet and lands a very hard body shot with a left. Mckenzie drops to his knees and the ref steps in.
Nam Phan defeats Cody Mckenzie by TKO (Body Shot) in Round 2

Koscheck says this is the best day of the show seeing Mckenzie get his ass kicked. First loss for Mckenzie. Phan looks good in the standup.

the fact that Koscheck gets wood over a guy nowhere near his level is a testament to what an unhappy and insecure guy he is.
I dig Nam’s steez, but i really wish they wouldn’t have guys at his level on the show.
I felt the same about Danzig and Lauzon. Lauzon had beat the opposing COACH for eff’s sake. To each their own.
Also, i never knew that in addition to bjj, mt etc there was a martial art called “rrrrrrrrrrrisssssssssssssssssssssssscontrowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwl”.
    Must be a French thang…

I think GSP is the best there ever was, there best there is and best there ever will be. BAM!

Brookins surprise the shit out of me with that domination! He is too real for real.

Cody dominated the snot out of the first 3/4 of that first round… Then he gassed and felt some clean shots from Nam. There was nothing left for Cody in the second, he just didn’t have the juice for cage control, pinning against the wall, or a takedown attempt.. He had enough and you could see it. Nam took advantage and put on a display of crisp striking ability. I am really looking forward to more from Nam.

I think sometimes after I watch this season I just start screaming “WRIST CONTROL!”…. I don’t know where that comes from…. Apparently it’s how you win fights…..

I agree with the higher level thing Harry, but the way they try out and pick this show is beyond me. There are so many guys trying out to get on.. What was there last week? 260 that showed up plus more that sent in videos because they had fights going on Friday/ Saturday…

What do you guys all think about TUF Canada? Do you think we have the talent for 145’s, 155’s and 185’s? Those are the only weights I think we can support at “UFC” or world level.

  5. Phan fought smart, but he’s getting somewhat of an easy road. He’s too small I think to win the show. Right now, Brookins seems like a favorite.

I really don’t want to see TUF Canada; I want to see more Canadians on TUF. It’s a great, watchable show just as it is .

  7. Xerglacia says:

They already gave away the two that advance through to the semis next week, if you watched the preview for next week’s episode closely.

They did the same for the wildcard pick, which let me know that Dane lost his fight, because they briefly flashed his picture along with all the other wildcard contenders when they were talking about who was being considered for the wildcard spot, even though his fight was on the same show.

No, we will riot. Havn’t you ever seen the Habs in the playoffs? Win or lose the streets are nuts! I can’t wait for Saturday’s beatdown!

  11. Seriously though, imagine if GSP lost one of these brutal decisions that we come to expect each card (like Phan)? The fans at the Bell Centre would riot Maurice Richard style. No doubt about it.

I think they will riot either way.
