Top MMA News Breaks Down UFC 120
UFC 120 is right around the corner and Top MMA News has its regular predictions for you. The card feature a lot of U.K. fighters as it is being held in London and has a main event of Michael Bisping vs Yoshiro Akiyama. Tomorrow’s fights also feature two Canadians – both in their second UFC fight. Claude Patrick looks to knock off a TUF champion, while Mark Holst looks to win in his sophomore attempt.
Here are the predictions. If you disagree, why not head over to the Top MMA News Forum and add your $.02:
Yoshihiro Akiyama (2) vs. Michael Bisping (3)
Drolet – Akiyama by Decsion
Wilson – I think Akiyama is the technically better fighter and he will grind out the unanimous decision win
Rempel – Akiyama hasn’t looked great in his first two UFC bouts with a controversial split decision against Belcher in his debut and a submission loss to Leben where he looked gassed after the first round and was caught in a late submission. Bisping needs to get back to his winning ways if he wants to get back in the title hunt and this fight is where he’ll do it with a Unanimous Decision win.
Leblanc – Bisping via Decision
Grienke – Bisping will take a strategic victory and out score on the feet to take the decision.
Carlos Condit (3) vs. Dan Hardy (2)
Drolet – Condit by violent TKO – Carlos has looked better each time he fights in the Octagon and he’ll rip through Hardy hopefully setting up a GSP vs Condit matchup. (When Condit was on top at the WEC this was once talked about, but forgotten til now)
Wilson – Condit will probably let his ego get the better of him and stand and trade with Hardy. If this turns into a brawl Hardy will dominate and get the TKO finish.
Rempel – Both of these men have shown that they can take a beating and keep coming at their opponent. Hardy went five rounds with WW Champ GSP and defended multiple submissions but ultimately lost all five rounds decisively. Condit was getting picked apart by Rory MacDonald in his last fight but came out like a man possessed and was able to finish MacDonald with strikes with only 7 seconds remaining in the fight. I’m picking Condit to win via Split decision in an all out war and fight of the night candidate.
Leblanc – Hardy via 3rd round TKO
Grienke – I think Condit learned a lesson for the first two rounds against Rory MacDonald and will not stay on his feet with a superior striker. Condit will take Hardy down and grind out a decision win.
John Hathaway (4) vs. Mike Pyle (1)
Drolet – Hathaway by Split decision – Fight of the night
Wilson – This is a really close fight. I see Hathaway using his strength to stay out of bad positions and take a unanimous decision victory
Rempel – Hathaway is coming of a high after dominating perennial title contender Diego Sanchez in his last fight. Hathway dropped Sanchez early and continued to pick him apart en route to a one sided unanimous decision victory. Pyle is also coming off a decisive win over Jesse Lennox, Pyle controlled him for the entire fight before putting him to sleep with a triangle choke. I predict the fast rising Hathaway to take a unanimous decision and move closer to a welterweight title shot sometime in 2011.
Leblanc – Hathaway Via Decision
Grienke – I keep hearing great things about Mike Pyle from those training at Xtreme Couture, so I will take Pyle by TKO over Hathaway in Round 2.
Travis Browne (0) vs. Cheick Kongo (5)
Drolet – Cheick Kongo by Decision
Wilson – Browne has the punchers chance but I think Kongo can easily handle him and take a TKO victory
Rempel -Kongo will probably never be a title contender in the UFC but he usually beats the guys he’s supposed to beat, Kongo’s recent losses are to a pair of title contenders and Browne has not faced the same caliber of competition that Kongo has. I predict Kongo to put an end to Browne’s undefeated streak with a second round TKO.
Leblanc – Kongo via 1st round TKO
Grienke – Agree with Leblanc, TKO round 1.
Claude Patrick (5) vs. James Wilks (0)
Drolet – Claude Patrick by submission in the 1st with Sub of the night
Leblanc – Patrick via 3rd round Guillotine Choke
Wilson – This is a tough fight for Patrick especially if it stays on the feet. Patrick should be able to get it to the ground and pull off the submission victory
Leblanc – Patrick via 3rd round Guillotine Choke
Rempel – After a few declined opportunities at the UFC, Claude Patrick did not disappoint in his debut making Ricardo Funch tap out to his patented Guillotine choke. Wilks was flawless during his time in the Ultimate Fighter house. Wilks has gone 2-1 with his loss coming to Matt Brown. I predict Patrick to secure his 4th straight guillotine choke victory and continue his rise in the welterweight division.
Grienke – Who else? Patrick by Guillotine. Patrick is world class.
Mark Holst (4) vs. Paul Sass (1)
Drolet – Holst by TKO in the 3rd in a hard fought back and forth battle.
Wilson – It’s been awhile since Sass last fought. I see Holst keeping the fight on the feet and taking the unanimous decision win
Rempel – Holst got his chance in the UFC after defeating TUF Alumni Corey Hill and fell to John Gunderson via unanimous decision. Holst will have to keep the fight on the feet if he doesn’t want to get trapped in what has been dubbed the Sassangle. Paul Sass has finished seven of his ten fights via triangle choke. In an opinion that is sure to make me unpopular among some readers I’m predicting an early submission victory for Paul Sass… although I hope I’m wrong!
Leblanc – Holst via decision
Grienke – Holst will keep this one standing and pick Sass apart on his feet.
