Top MMA News Breaks Down UFC Fight Night 22
UFC Fight Night: Marquardt vs Palhares is live from Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas tomorrow night. Here is the Top MMA News breakdown of the night’s fights.
Nate Marquardt (-286) vs Rousimar Palhares (+195)
In the co-main event of the night (the other being TUF Season 12 premier), Nate ‘the Great’ Marquardt will attempt to to ascend back up to the first contender spot using Palhares as an example. A veteran of over ten years experience, Nate has a catch bag of skills that will give any top ten fighter a run for their money. Despite his last lost to Chael Sonnen in February, Marquardt did some significant damage to Sonnen, which surprisingly did not stop the fight. Really Marguardt’s only strategy will be to avoid Palhares’ submissions, specifically leg and heel locks. That being said I think Palhares will stand with Marquardt, testing his boxing and when the fight hits the ground Palhares will submit Marquardt in a basic submission attempt, that will take everyone by surprise.
Prediction: Rousimar Palhares second round submission.
Efrain Escudero (-225) vs Oliveira (+125)
Charles Oliveira is 13-0 and has won in every type of fashion in his MMA career. Efrain Escudero has ever improving striking, but is mostly known to finish his fights via submission. These two will meet and will take this fight to test their weaknesses against one another. Escudero will continue to improve in the striking department and Oliveira will hold his own. With Oliveira’s strength listed as ‘heart’ he will unknowingly let Escudero set the pace and place of this fight. Despite an even match up on paper, it will be Escudero’s fight.
Prediction: Efrain Escudero by decision.
Jim Miller (-175) vs Gleison Tibau (+125)
Jim Miller has been knocking guys off on his way up the UFC rankings. Having gone 6 and 1 in the UFC with four straight wins, Miller has what it takes to become another great fighter. Tibau, who trains out of American Top Team, has great takedowns and good submissions but lacks a complete striking game, Tibau will have to use his athleticism to counter Miller’s total fighting package. Miller and Tibau will take the fight all over the cage, exchanging blows and submission attempts. Both Miller and Tibau’s skill set, will cancel each other out, leading to the judges having the finale say.
Prediction: Jim Miller via decision.
Ross Pearson (-300) vs Cole Miller (+225)
Ross Pearson, a British brawler, will look to employ his boxing and ground and pound to defeat Cole Miller, in a typical striker vs grappler match up. Pearson an Ultimate Fighter alumni, has a few battles under his belt in the UFC and is not afraid to stand and bang. Miller who has a superb submission game will exchange with Pearson but will undoubtedly look to take this fight to the ground. An exciting fighter who always looks to put on a show, Miller will employ the ‘Sakuraba style of submission’ – letting your opponent punch you repeatedly without contest and lead him into a false sense of hope where you then apply your carefully chosen submission. Make no mistake, this a legitimate tactic.
Prediction: Look for a late 3rd round submission by Cole Miller for ‘Fight of the Night’ and ‘Submission of the Night’ bonus.
