  7. I talked to the chairman of the Nova Scotia commission yesterday. The event is not approved yet. The commission is hoping to approve it soon.

I talked to Jason MacKay this morning and he still thinks his fight is on.

    W1 is not talking.

Hard to call fight of the night. It should be between:

    Matt MacGrath vs Ryan Machan

As a sleeper fight of the night:
    Jason MacKay vs Juan Barrantes

    I can’t wait.

What is up with their title holders? Who holds what right now ? The last show i saw was Wooley-Morvan for the belt. Are they gonna push title defences or what…

  17. harry balls says:

Sorry found it on their site:

Heavyweight Championship Title Bout – TBD

    Light Heavyweight Champion
    Craig “The Farmer” Brown

Welterweight Championship Title Bout – TBD

    Featherweight Champion
    John “Haggis Basher” Fraser

    Bantamweight Champion
    Adrian “The Bully” Wooley

Two TBDs ?Farmer fought last for them when exactly? They need to get on that shit if they want to be legit (fuck i spit mad rhymes).

  18. Jamie Locke says:

This show is looking awesome…..Wish I could get out there for it.

Who cares about titles really. I think the names they have here says they are legit. I like to see updated title holders, and champs to reflect consistancy in their shows and fighter roaster. But I think W1 is making a huge step here.

I also, if you havn’t noticed already, am stoked that the East Coast is finally getting a solid show. I hope that they sell out and make a couple bucks here so they could start doing regular shows in Hali.

  19. harry balls says:

I care about titles, actually. Sadly, most promotions have rendered them meaningless.
i really think W1 would take the next step if they had dudes with belts defending them against top guys. Otherwise , why bother.
Anyway really hope this card comes off. W1 seems like it has its act together now.

  20. James says:

W-1 needs to strip Farmer Brown of his title. He is an embarrassment to that organization.

Adrian Wooley and John Fraser are legit badass dudes. I was at their title fights in June and they were amazing.

  21. Harry, belts are neat, but usually irrelevent in regional promotions.

We’d love to have them at CFC, but with only 2-3 shows in a year, doesn’t leave us alot of options. Anybody title worthy is most likely not around too long as they move on to another promotion.

I think they are useless unless belts are consistently defended and the next challenger is built up. I dont’ think any Canadian promotions can pull it off properly.

I wish there was a way though.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  22. My utopian idea.

I would like to see a couple regionals (I don’t consider MFC regional) like W1, Wreck, AFC, Aggression, TFC, Ringside, CFC join to create a set of Canadian titles that can be defended on any of the shows.

They can call them the Top MMA News Canadian titles :)

    Some Matchmaking

    HW – vacant
LHW – Martin Desilets (TFC champ) vs Bosse (Ringside)
MW – Farmer Brown (W1) vs Kalib Starnes (AFC) at AFC 4 for title
WW – Alessio vs Jonathan Goulet (Ringside) at Ringside in Nov.
LW – Guillaume DeLorenzi (Ringside) injured is champ. Interim Clarke (TFC) vs Cardinal at TFC.
FW – Gagnon (Ringside) vs Fraser (W1) at W1 in November
BW – Wooley (W1) vs Delorme at CFC in October.

  23. Jamie Locke says:

    Keith you communist…..

I LOVE the IDEA of titles, but I agree with M.A.D. And using Farmer Brown as an excellent example. You can crown a champ at your local promotion, but then you’ll need to supply the number of fights you promise in the Championship clause contract or agreement. Otherwise, a guy can win your strap, then go out to another show and lose, what does that say about your strap?

  24. The problem is the fights need to sell in their regional markets.

What if the Hawkes vs Makdessi fight at CFC 4 was for the CFC 155 title.

Hawkes was the highest ranked 155er from Winnipeg and he lost to Makdessi. We’d now have a champ, that isn’t from here, and wouldn’t sell tickets.

Believe me, I’m a huge Bull fan, and i’d have him on every show, but it just doesn’t always make sense.

Cross promotional belts would be a great thing if it worked.

Another issue is some shows are content losing 100K a show. CFC can’t afford to do that, so we aren’t able to pay guys over the top money, and give them cans.

  25. harry balls says:

Some interesting points, I think Marc is right: perhaps don’t do it at all if it can’t be done the right way.
Still, if you do it right, it can give a promotion some legitimacy.

…oh and I hope Yager gets turned into cat food.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  26. typically i think that’s a shitty attitude, but not when it comes to titles.

I wish there was a way.

We need somebody like the Score to be involved and have co-promotional belts, but it’s a slow process.

LOL @ cat food. That would be awesome.

  27. robin black says:

I won a regional title. Since then, I am 1-2.

I am proud of the belt, will always treasure it, and hope to maybe wear it to the ring once and “defend” it for that organization. But I do not claim to be a champion. I’ve lost twice since then after all.

Fighters like belts cuz they’re cool and you get to show your kids one day when you explain why you have scars.

But they don’t work superwell in regional promotions for some of the reasons listed above.

Still, I treasure mine. Not too proud to say so.

  28. Stenson Stark says:

The cross promotional belt idea won’t work. You can’t compare the talent of a WRECK organization with the talent of an MFC or W-1.

In the end, I’m hoping that one organization will far surpass every other organization in Canada and all of the talent will gravitate there. I would like to see this show travel across Canada and continually be fed fighters from all of the other regional shows.

I realize that I’m living in a dream world but if an MFC and W-1 merged, imagine the talent that they would hold between them. Now that would be a show that could properly have titleholders.

Until someone gravitates to the top, titles will mean very little.

  29. JayKay says:

I won a belt. The other day when I was recycling stuff in the basement I found it. I have no love or interest in this belt. Other people I know have their UGC titles as tattoos. Oh well, to each their own I guess. I will say that if Birdy ever gets a tattoo to commemorate his belt I’ll hate him as much as I hate Quinn.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  30. Stenson, that is why I called it utopian.

MFC is the powerhouse in Canada MMA right now and their belt situation is in disarray. The only one that is properly defended is the MFC LW title.

It is just too hard for a non-UFC organization to sign guys long enough to defend their belts properly. Even Strikeforce has this problem.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  31. Stenson Stark says:

And unfortunately the pride of all the higher level organizations in Canada won’t allow them to merge with other organizations. They all want to be seen as the best.

I do believe that MFC is the powerhouse in Canada, but not by much. I think they do a better job of hyping themselves up than anything.

OK guys, so how do we get consistency in Canada? How can we grow?

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  32. harry balls says:

Ha we could do a whole notha thread on that, SS. howsabout not letting guys who last 40 seconds and never win be on your card? Or guys that consistently miss weight not getting fights? Maybe a sole governing body (outside of da gubment) is long overdue. As much as i have been a douchebag on here, i think most of the people involved in the sport want what is best for it.
If organizations were to come up with some sort of “MMA Bill of Rights”, as it were, it could save a lot of heartache in the future.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  33. JayKay says:

LOL at the thought that a ‘private’ organization wouldn’t be at risk for corruption, boxing anyone? The solution to ‘consistency’ is getting people with first hand knowledge of the sport more involved with the regulation side of the sport. Get retired fighters involved in the commissions and you’ll start to see change.

Right now most commissions are filled with promoters (or buddies of promoters), karate instructors, boxers and pro-wrastlers. MMA is poorly represented at this level.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  34. Jamie Locke says:

I am a huge fan of the idea of having MMA practitioners, or retired fighters manning the commissions, judging panels and ensuring reffing standards are maintained at a high level.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  35. harry balls says:

true, KayKay/ I just think most gov peeps are outta touch with the sport. Like i said, we should have a whole thread on this somewhere. AAAAAAAAAnyways, this event is a lock right?

And (pertaining to the belt thingy) Bosse fought for these cats in june. He also clobbered their LHW title holder, Craig Brown. I would pay to see these two fight again and it would be a great marketing angle.

  36. harry balls says:

sorry JAY kay. wasnt makin fun of your handle….

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  37. Stenson Stark says:

Considering I bought tickets, yes it’s a lock.

    Bosse would clobber Brown again.

Bosse vs Hollett would be a great fight. Two local heros squaring off.

These guys have their shit together. Let’s just hope the fans show up.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  38. JayKay says:

Additionally if people really wanted to make a change we’d see an ‘industry’ group get formed which would be composed of fighters, promoters etc… who would provide ‘best practise’ papers to the commissions for their consideration and education.

This however is a long time off.

  39. harry balls says:

Can’t i just be King of MMA? haha.
RE: Farmer/Bosse: I just think if they are gonna have a belt system, implement it and make it relevant. The fact they went out and got Ninja shows that that are really making a push for legitimacy.

  40. Jamie Locke says:

What happened to Jamie Yager? He was on the card against Jeremy Hamilton before, I was really looking forward to seeing him get sorted out on Canadian soil!

  41. Michele says:

Yager didn’t pass his medical according to the commission. The internet says his hands are broken.

    So many great fights!

Just found out I can go. Never been to Halifax but this is the best reason to go for a vacation.

    Johnson vs Romero – awesome!

As an MMA lover, I am excited about this event for many reasons. Top talent, settling of rivalries, and I can only imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like. My cousin lives in Halifax and everyone is stoked.

  45. Mike Zakurai says:

This is a make or break show for W1 and I think they will fail. Nobody can touch the MFC in Canada. W-1 are a bunch of wannabee pretenders.

  46. Grienk says:

UPDATE: William Romero, Kyle Sandford out. Douglas Evans, Nordine Taleb in.

I wanted to see Romero vs johnson!!!!!

    Evans is a great replacement

And Mike – you’re an idiot. The talent that W-1 has put on display is extremely impressive. These guys are going places.

  49. harry balls says:

W1 has had some big hits(Morvam-Wooley etc.) and big misses (Newton seemed not to give a shit) on the shows i have seen, but the fact they are bringing in names shows that they give a damn. MFC is irrelevant here (hear me out ) because we will never get to see a show in my neck of the woods.
Although i fired off an angry missive to them after Carter-Newton, i really wish them success. The fact they are willing to not just be a regional promotion bodes well for them (and us) I think.
