Top MMA News was cageside for KOTC Lock Down last night at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta. With only two fights making it to the judges scorecards the approximately 1500 in attendance were treated to many fantastic finishes.

Top MMA News choice for fight of the night was a back and forth battle between “Ruthless” Ryan Chiappe and Garett Davis. Davis weathered barrages of punches throughout the fight and came back to choke Chiappe unconscious with an Anaconda Choke capturing the vacant Welterweight Title in the process. Garett Davis also picked up the Submission of the Night for the slick choke. An honorable mention goes to Devan Murray who used an Arm Triangle to choke Jon Simonar unconscious.

Top MMA News award for Knock Out of the Night was no contest as Trent Thorne countered a leg kick with a huge right hand that knocked Chad Frey out cold and sent him crashing face first into the canvas, knocking his tooth right through his lip.

Alex Mohgrabi vs. Jon Ganshorn
Mohgrabi opens with wild shots and Ganshorn responds with knees. Mohgrabi continues to swing wildly. Ganshorn counters with jabs followed by a few big shots that bloody Mohgrabi. A big combo drops Mohgrabi and Ganshorn follows up with ground and pound until the referee calls a halt to the fight.

Ken Kerfont vs. Keenan Feeny
Feeny comes forward and gets his head caught in a guillotine attempt. Feeny fights through, pulls his head out and escapes. Feeny scoops Kerfont up with a double leg and slams him to the mat. Kerfont rolls up into the fetal position and the referee steps in to stop the fight.

Colin Lloyd vs. John Grant
Round 1:
Grant attempts a single leg to open but is stuffed. Grant throws a body kick which is caught by Lloyd. Grant attempts another single leg but is unable to get him to the ground. Grant sets up a double leg with a big left and lands in side control. Grant moves to north/south and attempts a choke but Lloyd escapes back to his feet. Grant lands a leg kick and Lloyd throws himself off balance with a big punch and slips to the ground. Lloyd recovers and throws a combo before getting taken down with a double leg. Grant lands in side control and works for position, transitioning to full mount. Grant rains down heavy punches forcing Lloyd to give up his back. Grant continues to hammer away from the back. Lloyd spins back to mount and Grant pounds away until the round ends. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Grant

Round 2:
Grant lands a leg kick followed by a Superman punch. Grant looks for a Guillotine choke but Lloyd easily escapes. Grant presses him against the cage and secures a single leg landing in full mount. Grant lands short elbows and Lloyd gives up his back. Grant sinks his hooks and secures the rear naked choke victory.

Chris Kizuik vs. Jeremiah Simonar
Simonar misses an overhand right and Kizuik stays active with pawing jabs followed by a missed head kick. Kizuik comes forward with a quick combo and both tie up briefly. They separate before Kizuik comes in close again and engages in some dirty boxing landing a pair of uppercuts. The two fighters trade shots against the cage until Kizuik secures a double leg and lands in guard. Kizuik passes to full mount and begins to land punches and short elbows. Simonar tries unsuccessfully to buck him off and gives up his back in the process. Kizuik sinks in the rear naked choke forcing Simonar to tap out.

Kris Miskanek vs. Jason Rorick
Miskanek lands leg kicks followed by a combo and Rorick ties up with him. Rorick already bloodied is tripped to the mat and is easily mounted. Miskanek lands a flurry of huge elbows, forcing the referee to step in and rescue him from any further damage.

Jamie McLean vs. Daylon Erickson
McLean connects with a right followed by a spinning back fist that misses it’s mark. Erickson secures a takedown landing in side control. McLean escapes back to his feet only to be taken back down with Erickson landing in full mount before transitioning to the back. McLean again gets back to his feet and is taken back down immediately. Erickson takes the mount position, postures up and lands ground and pound. Erickson looks for an armbar. McLean scrambles for position and winds up in north/south. McLean gets back to his feet but Erickson secures a single leg and lands in his guard. McLean slips an arm around the neck and secures a guillotine choke which is briefly defended before Erickson finally has to tap out giving McLean the come from behind victory.

Trent Thorne vs. Chad Frey
Round 1:
Thorne lands a few jabs before Frey ties up and secures the take down landing in half guard. Frey passes to mount and postures up with rights and lefts. Thorne gives up his back and Frey looks for a rear naked choke. Thorne defends before spinning into the guard. Frey lands a few shots from the bottom. Thorne lands a few big rights before driving the forearm into the throat. Thorne releases and lands more punches with minimal damage. Thorne passes to mount and lands a few shots before the bell. Round 2:
The two trade a few leg kicks before Thorne lands a huge right that knocks Frey out cold sending him crashing face first to the mat and knocking his tooth through his lip. Frey lays motionless in a pool of blood for several minutes before recovering.

Jon Simonar vs. Devan Murray
Murray lands a leg kick and Simonar closes the distance and jumps on his back looking for a rear naked choke. Murray escapes out the back and loads up a big right. Simonar lands a few leg kicks and Murray secures a takedown landing in side control before passing to mount. Murray postures up and lands big rights and lefts. Simonar attempts to buck him off but Murray keeps his weight on him. Simonar scrambles to escape but ends up getting caught in an arm triangle. Referee Kyle Cardinal calls a halt to the bout after Simonar is choked unconscious.
Devan Murray defeats Jon Simonar via Submission (Arm Triangle) at 2:24 of Round 1

Josh Ladouceur vs. Tony Bibby
Bibby ducks under a big right and attempts a single leg takedown but gets caught in a guillotine choke. Bibby picks up Ladouceur and slams him to the ground. Ladouceur pops right back up but leaves his neck exposed and Bibby sinks in the Guillotine, forcing Ladouceur to tap out. After the fight Bibby calls for a rematch against Mike Davis.

Mukai Maromo vs. Carlos Espinoza
Round 1:
Maromo opens witha leg kick and Espinoza responds with one of his own. Maromo lands a body kick and Espinoza grabs him and muscles him to the ground landing in guard. Espinoza drops a big right and and passes to half guard. Maromo escapes to his feet and lands a big right and a combo. Espinoza scrambles to guard and moves to side control. Espinoza works short elbows and lands knees to the body. Espinoza lands an illegal elbow to the back of the head and referee Thomas Collins calls a time out to deduct a point from Espinoza. The referee restarts the fight and Espinoza lands a jab. Maromo presses forward with a big combo against the cage. Espinoza looks for a takedown in the final ten seconds but it’s stuffed and Maromo winds up on top as the round ends. Top MMA News scores the round 9-9

Round 2:
Maromo lands a left and a right followed by a head kick that sends Espinoza reeling. Maromo continues to land shots at will. Espinoza looks for a takedown but it’s defended by Maromo. Maromo lands a big right and both men exchange leg kicks. Maromo lands a solid head kick and Espinoza takes him down landing in half guard. Maromo sweeps into his guard and stands back up. Maromo lands a thundering body shot that drops Espinoza. Maromo looks to follow up with ground and pound but backs off when Espinoza turtles and the referee steps in to end the fight.

Brad Stewart vs. Elmer Waterhen
Round 1:
Stewart lands a leg kick and a combo followed by a body kick. Waterhen lands a body kick of his own and Stewart responds with a head kick. Waterhen throws a leg kick that lands and Stewart responds with one of his own but it’s caught by Waterhen. Waterhen lands a pair of leg kicks and Stewart responds with a combo and some jabs. The two exchange shots and Stewart attempts a takedown but it’s defended by Waterhen. A head kick from Stewart lands flush on the chin. The two exchange heavy shots and Stewart finishes up withwith a leg kick and a pair of knees as the round comes to an end. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Stewart

Round 2:
Both fighters exchange shots to open the round and Stewart lands a leg kick. Waterhen lands a leg kick and falls short with a head kick. Waterhen lands a leg kick followed by a combo. Another combo followed by a high kick lands from Waterhen. Stewart lands a big right followed by a left and a right jab and finally another high kick. Stewart pushes forward with another combo. Waterhen lands a leg kick which is met with a head kick from Stewart. Waterhen lands a leg kick and both exchange wild shots as the round comes to an end. Round 3:
Waterhen lands a leg kick and Stewart responds with a combo that comes up short. Waterhenlands a few legs kicks and Stewart comes forward with another combo. The two exchange leg kicks until Stewart pushes forward with a big combo followed by a single leg into side control. Stewart switches to north/south position and then to full mount. Stewart postures up and lands a few shots before Waterhen spins away and gets back to his feet. Stewart shoots for a takedown but has it stuffed. Brad Stewart defeats Elmer Waterhen via Majority Decision (30-27, 29-28 Stewart, 29-29)

Dan Severn vs. Chad Olmstead
Round 1:
The two fighters circle one another to start before Severn lands a quick jab. Olmstead responds with a combo which prompts Severn to tie up and press Olmstead into the cage. Severn lands knees to the thighs of Olmstead for the majority of the round with a foot stomp thrown in for good measure. Severn lands a few knees to the mid section before a lull in the action forces referee John Braak to separate the fighters and restart them in the center of the cage. Round 2:
Severn looks for a single leg which is briefly defended by Olmstead. Severn finally drags him down and secures the crucifix position and rains down punches and hammerfists until the referee steps in to rescue Olmstead from any further punishment giving the UFC Hall of Famer his 94th pro MMA win.

Dominic O’Grady vs. Tim Means
Round 1:
O’Grady rushes in with a big flurry and a takedown attempt. Means defends and responds with a combo of his own. O’Grady again grabs a single leg and this time finishes the takedown landing in half guard before Means is able to replace his full guard. O’Grady who is already cut on the top of his head works back to his feet. Means lands a big combo and the two exchange shots against the cage. Means lands a leg kick and O’Grady lands a combo. A big right by O’Grady drops Means to a knee briefly. Both fighters go toe to toe landing heavy shots. O’Grady secures a strong double leg landing in guard. The referee calls time as Means lands an illegal elbow to the back of the head. Means is deducted a point and the fighters restart and exchange blows as the round ends. Round 2:
Means throws pawing jabs and O’Grady responds with a combo. Means lands a knee before getting caught in a guillotine attempt. Means defends but gets bullied to the ground. Means sweeps and escapes the submission attempt and winds up in guard. Means stands up and drops a right while getting back into the guard. O’Grady throws up a triangle attempt which is easily shrugged off. Means drops back and looks for a heel hook. O’Grady works out of it and moves to his back. Means escapes back into the guard and lands lefts and rights. O’Grady reverses and gets to side control but Means gets back to his feet. O’Grady takes him back down and looks for a kimura but it’s defended and Means ends the round in O’Grady’s guard.

O’Grady unleashes a trio of rights and exchanges shots. Means lands a big left and both fighters land big rights. Means lands a body shot and O’Grady shoots for a single but is unable to secure Itand is muscled to the ground. Means drops a big right and a left from the feet and follows up with two more shots. Means passes to mount before taking the back and looks for a rear naked choke. O’Grady escapes and looks for a kimura but Means escapes. Ryan Chiappe vs. Garett Davis
Round 1:
Chiappe looks to make it a short fight and rushes in with a big combo. Davis responds and both fighters exchange huge shots against the cage. Chiappe secures a takedown into guard. Davis holds on tight and Chiappe attempts to slam his way free. Chiappe gets seperation and moves him into the cage. Davis uses the cage to get to his feet but eats several uppercuts on the way up. Chiappe continues to press Davis against the cage. Chiappe secures a single leg however Davis pops right back up. Chiappe again gets the single leg but this time winds up in guard. Davis again gets back to his feet. Chiappe tees off landing big shots. Davis fires back with a flurry of his own before the round ends. Top MMA News scores the round 10-9 for Chiappe

Round 2:
The two fighters, respecting each others punching power are a little more cautious to begin the second round. After a brief period of inactivity Davis lands a leg kick and Chiappe responds with a body shot. Both trade shots before Chiappe rushes in and gets caught in a guillotine attempt. Chiappe looks for single leg but Davis scrambles and trips Chiappe landing in half guard. Davis attempts a kimura but Chiappe is able to muscle out and spin away. Davis takes the back and looks for a rear naked choke. Chiappe escapes into guard and gets back to his feet. Chiappe lands a few shots overlapping over the bell to end the round.

Round 3:
Davis lands a leg kick and Chiappe responds with a single leg attempt but gets caught in a guillotine attempt. Chiappe frees himself and unleashes a barrage of punches against the cage. Davis again sinks in a guillotine attempt. Chiappe escapes and attempts a single leg but can’t finish it and instead unleashes another flurry of punches against the cage. Chiappe is landing huge uppercuts but Davis weathers the storm and locks up an anaconda choke. Chiappe defends briefly but referee Kyle Cardinal finally has to peel Davis off of an unconscious Chiappe. With the submission victory Garett Davis captures the vacant Welterweight Title.

    Trent, congrats on the sweet KO victory. Would’ve been sweeter if it came in the 1st round, but it was well worth the wait! Did you know it will end like that?

    Props to Chad for taking it like a champ. He’ll learn from it and come back stronger & become a better fighter for it.
