Carwin vs Mir for UFC Interim Heavyweight Title
The UFC announced today that Frank Mir will face Shane Carwin for the Interim Heavyweight title as a UFC 111 semi-main event. With Brock Lesnar on the shelf, possibly permanently, the UFC has decided that an Interim title is necessary.
This will be Mir’s second chance for the Interim belt as he defeated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the Interim title while the champion Randy Couture was in a legal tussle with the UFC. Mir also won the undisputed title prior to his motorcycle accident.
Shane Carwin had been scheduled to be Brock Lesnar’s challenger in the fall of 2009 until Lesnar became ill. This will be Carwin’s first crack at a belt.
This bout joins an already strong March 27 card in New Jersey. The main event is Georges St-Pierre vs Dan Hardy for the Welterweight title. Also announced is a Welterweight contender fight between Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves.
