UMC 19 Results – WAMMA Dominates

UMC Banner THUMBTop MMA News made the trip to Regina to watch some amateur MMA live at UMC 21.  Organizer Nolan Coller had to do some quick shuffling as he lost his semi-final fight but he managed to pull it off and the crowd went home happy. The card was held at the Regina Performing Arts Centre and there was not a bad seat in the house as 550 crammed into the intimate fight setting.   There were four amateur MMA fights, two grappling exhibitions, and one kickboxing exhibition.

In the main event, Winnipeg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts’s Brad Katona stunned Regina’s Adam Yan and then finished him with strikes to win his first MMA fight.  Katona had the positional advantage for the entire bout and almost finished Yan with a Rear Naked Choke at the end of round one before the bell saved Yan.  Katona looked very impressive and the 135-er looks to have a solid MMA future.

WAMMA also took home victories in the other two MMA fights it participated in.  A very in shape Nick Enns blasted thunderous body shots on Brandon’s Blood Inc.’s Brad Allerie.  The Light-Heavyweight Enns took Allerie down immediately and assaulted him on the ground.  Allerie was not half the fighter, technically or physically, that Enns was and the fight only lasted 42 seconds.  Likewise WAMMA’s Brad Bernshine who finished Edmonton’s Alvin Alexis in a minute.  Bernshine used his size advantage to get top position and finished Alexis off with an Americana.

In the UMC 21 Fight of the Night, Estevan’s Lyndon Koshcek and Regina Infight’s Joey Staniowski battled in a UMC Welterweight contest.  Koshcek physically dominated the smaller Staniowski and repeatedly took Staniowski’s down with slams in the first round.  Staniowski remained calm in the back and forth first round and it was apparent that he was sounder technically than Koshcek.  As the first round wore on, Staniowski was the fresher fighter and was starting to land effective knees and other strikes.  It was a great first round! The second round was all Joey as the hometown favorite gained top position, then Koshcek’s back with a body triangle, and eventually finished the fight with many unanswered strikes before Koshcek tapped out from the strikes.
