Mixed Martial Arts Referee Certification – COMMAND Canada
One of the most asked questions I get is how can I become a MMA referee? If you are serious about going the referee route, you need to get onboard with this course. It is taught by the man himself, Big John McCarthy who since UFC 2 has been the authoritative referee in our sport. Lots of good people have been getting opportunities who have been through this program, and everything about it, improves the sport we are all involved with.

C.O.M.M.A.N.D Instructor Profile
Head Instructor: “Big” John McCarthy – Los Angeles USA
Skills / Technical Coordinator: Brian Peterson – Los Angeles USA
C.O.M.M.A.N.D Coordinator: Elaine McCarthy – Los Angeles USA
Participants in this program will learn a systematic approach to becoming a certified Mixed Martial Arts referee.
The core of the learning system will consist of developing an understanding of both basic and advanced fundamental skills unique to refereeing a MMA contest. This will include an understanding of the technical skills associated with MMA combatives, interpretation of rules, as well as an understanding of the specific duties of the MMA referee.
Students will learn through a series of lectures, media presentations, and high level combative simulation exercises that will challenge and prepare them for the reality of MMA officiating. Participants must demonstrate the aptitude, ability, and willingness to serve as a referee and also possess an understanding of the sport. Participants will be tested on performance, knowledge of material, identification of various MMA techniques, as well as their officiating skills inside the cage/ring.
Participants must be physically and mentally prepared and free from injuries. This is a student active course in which high level combative simulation will be a component of the evaluation process.
This course is very challenging with significant course material and students should prepare and familiarize themselves prior to enrollment with the multitude of techniques and skills associated with MMA. Students will have the opportunity to review all the techniques that will be required for certification during the course, however, it is strongly recommended that anyone participating be able to identify many of the techniques prior to participation. As such the names of all techniques which students must be able to identify will be made available to all applicants. Students can look up the techniques over the internet, research them through books and videos, or seek out a qualified MMA instructor to become familiar with all the techniques.
This course is not designed to be a “how to” course on MMA techniques, however it is imperative that MMA officials be able to readily identify the arsenal of skills that are utilized during an MMA contest, in order to ensure the safety of the participants.
The training will take place inside a ballroom of the Marriott hotel located at the casino. Classes will start promptly and may go into the evening. Be prepared for a lot of material and long training days.
