Canadian Fighting Championship Finalizes May 22 Lineup

Gregory BabeneThe CFC has finalized its May 22 lineup.  The card, which will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, features a total of eight fights.  Notably absent from the final roster of fighters was previously announced Ron Faircloth.  The Wisconsin fighter was forced to pull out of CFC 2 due to “undisclosed medical concerns.”  Now fighting Winnipeg’s Joe Doerksen is Greg “Blade” Babene.   The Middleweight trains under fellow Frenchman Cyrille Diabate, whose Snake Team is producing excellent fighters including the UFC’s Xavier Foupa-Pokam.  Diabate is also the striking coach for Team US on this season of The Ultimate Fighter 9 so one can imagine that his protege Babene will be looking to keep Doerksen on his feet and knock him out.

Besides the Doerksen/Babene main event, the card also features a solid all-Canadian Middleweight bout between Team Canada MMA’s Chris Fontaine facing Jesse Bongfeldt from Kenora MMA, with years of training under his longtime manager and coach Lee Mein at Canadian Martial Arts Centre.  Bongfeldt is 16-3 and has only lost to WEC champion Jamie Varner and the UFC’s Jonathan Goulet in his last 15 fights.  Fontaine is no slouch either.  At 18-11, Fontaine has not been able to get that big win – losing fights to David Loiseau, Jason Day, and Jason MacDonald.  The winner of this fight will take a big step up the Canadian Middleweight ladder.

Winnipeg fans will remember Eric Perez’ controversial three round brawl with Dean Lewis at CFC 1 earlier this year.  Perez will be back at CFC 2 with Dean Lewis cornering him!  His opponent is Dmitri Waardenburg who quickly accepted this fight after the XMMA card he was scheduled to fight on was cancelled.  Perez is promising that this fight will be just as exciting as his last fight – that may be a hard promise to keep !

One Muay Thai fight is scheduled for the card.  Dave Zuniga will take on Alex Ricci.  This fight is rematch of their 2006 fight that saw Zuniga TKO Ricci in the first round.  No doubt Toronto’s Ricci will be looking to avenge this loss on May 22.

Get Nick Penner to fight in your organization, hes a local boy from just outside Winnipeg, one of the best Heavyweights in Canada at 8-1. He sold 300 tickets for his last fight under king jon boxing promotion, the only mma fight on there card. Im sure he would love to fight for CFC as well.
