Waterhen Steps Up to Face MacDonald on Island Pride

KOTC Canada Island Pride May 22Andrew Buckland was advertised to be in the main event on the King of the Cage Island Pride card for months.  Buckland was to fight the undefeated Rory MacDonald on the Nanaimo show.  However, Buckland left the KOTC in a lurch when he signed with the MFC a week prior to his KOTC fight.

In Buckland’s place comes KOTC veteran Elmer Waterhen who accepted the fight with less than a week’s notice.  Waterhen is a tough fighter out of the Champions Fight Club in Saskatoon.  Waterhen is no stranger to the Vancouver Island promotion as Waterhen headlined the last KOTC show in Nanaimo where he lost a decision to Jason Heit.  Waterhen will have to be at his best as Rory MacDonald is a young MMA phenom who captured the KOTC World Lightweight title in 2008 from Clay French.  MacDonald, who also has wins against Kajan Johnson and Jordan Mein, has never gone the distance as he always finishes his opponents.  This will be MacDonald’s first foray into the Welterweight division, so Waterhen will be looking to give Rory a rude welcoming to 170 lbs.

John Cooper, promoter of the KOTC Island Pride event, likes Elmer Waterhen in the main event.  “If Waterhen was available in the first place I never would have bothered with Buckland.  Loyal to King of the Cage and just likes to fight.  You know Waterhen is going to do what he says he is going to do.”

Cooper remained diplomatic when talking about Buckland.  “They said they never received the contract, but I sent the contract multiple times.  I never received one back.  I guess he received a better offer from MFC at the last minute.”

The Island Pride event takes place on May 8 at the Frank Crane Arena.  The event features 13 bouts featuring a ton of local athletes.  One fight that catches Cooper’s eye is the Shawn Albrecht/Graham Spencer Featherweight tilt.  “I am excited for this fight.  Albrecht is going to get some stiff competition from Impact’s Graham Spencer.”

There are some tickets still available for the KOTC Canada show.  Ticket information is available by calling 1-866-956-6228.   Top MMA News encourages our readers to support their local promotions!

Waterhen doesn’t fight out of Champion Fight Club anymore and hasn’t for some time. I think he’s out of Way of the Dragon Martial Arts. As far as I know Champion Fight club doesn’t even exist anymore.
