Kalib Starnes to Headline Ultimate Cage Wars

By:

Kalib Starnes

Kalib Starnes will be coming to Winnipeg to headline Ultimate Cage Wars 16: Canada vs Hawaii, according to Gabriel Santos. Santos, the matchmaker for the Winnipeg-based UCW promotion, announced the bout on his Facebook profile.

Starnes is infamously known for his “Running Man” fight at UFC 83 against Nate Quarry.  In the bout, Starnes failed to engage Quarry and Quarry ended up mocking the Canadian fighter near the end of the bout.  Starnes was unceremoniously released by the UFC following the bout.

Now Kalib Starnes is looking to continue to rebuild his reputation as a fighter.  MMAWeekly reports that  sources close to the bout state that his opponent will be Bret “The Angry Hick” Bergmark.  Bergmark has a 5-1 MMA record and is trained by Cesar Gracie and has had several fights in the Zuffa-owned WEC.

Starnes will be coming into Winnipeg on a winning streak.  Last November, Starnes defeated Chris Cisneros in Hawaii after Cisneros accepted the bout on very short notice.  Bergmark’s last fight was also a victory.  He defeated Jesse Juarez by Decision a year ago at Ontario’s Iroquois MMA Championships.

Starnes was a very promising Middleweight coming out of The Ultimate Fighter 3.  Lets hope Starnes puts on a good performance on June 19 and returns to prominence once again.

I was, and still am, seriously pissed at his “performance” in the Quarry fight. I would not have been so devastated if he had not been a Canadian fighter. Sure I would still have made all the jokes but it would not have affected me the way that it did. I mean, I was watching the fight and my face was turning red I was so embarrassed!! I can’t believe Kalib is even trying to continue an MMA career.

Okay so this is where I was going to make some stupid joke about Kalib fighting Kyle Maynard next. The biggest thing I see wrong with making such a joke is that Kyle has heart and I don’t want to take any class away from Kyle… I don’t think we need to worry about that with Kalib.

Stupid thing is, is that people will likely buy tickets to go see this fight just to boo Starnes…I guess it’s true, there is no such thing as bad press.

This was just one bad fight on his behalf, not every fight he’s ever had. I enjoyed watching Starnes fight Leben and it was a good fight.

not to discredit any one persons opinion but the bottom line is that Nate Quarry is a bad ass dude and he hit Kalib with some nasty kicks. Getting hurt would discourage anyones will to step back into the pocket and throw!! I for one loved how Starnes represented himself on TUF. The only issue I see is his heart. The true champions push past the pain. I don’t think an athlete should ever be booed unless they are cheating or being dirty but Kalib’s last UFC appearance deserved the boos. Hopefully he can change everyones opinion and rebound with a solid performance.

One bad performance or not, Starnes is still super talented. His one sided beatdown of Macdonald was super impressive. If he can get his drive back he could be a real talent at MW. This card looks awesome !!

until you’ve been “caught” by a hard shot in the ring or cage that makes your brain see a “flash” like lightning, you do not, or ever will have the right to judge fighters from your arm chairs. You might “get it” if someone comes over to your seat and whaullup’s you in the head and we will see if you just carry on with what you are doing, or you start your own “running man” chapter,
so shut up or knuckle up

I hope Kalib is on his game. One fight should not determine how an athlete is remembered. Nobody is perfect. I will be at this card to see what happens.

  15. Jason….

Does Bob Cole need to get bodychecked in the NHL before doing HNIC play-by-play?
Does Joe Rogan need to get KO’d by CroCop before he can say that CroCop was a disappointment in the UFC?

If MMA wants to become mainstream, then fighters need to understand that they will be judged by the mainstream audience.

robertson I dont think you have a clue. While Starnes may know some angels that does not make him a member nor a criminal. I know a handful of them and they r just guys who enjoy their harleys and the camraderie.
hard to believe the bashing he took cause he had broken bones and didnt want to get hurt much worse than that, the quarry fight was hard to watch but clearly he deserves another shot…

I expect Kalib to take this guy down and punish him, interesting that “fans” like this Christina Cow will disregard a fighters entire body of work to instead childishly focus on one loss, birds of a feather flock together…mindless shit.
This guy is a good fighter, and a hell of a nice guy in person.
