Filho Misses Weight for WEC 36

By:

Paolo Filho missed weight by seven pounds yesterday at the official WEC weigh-ins.  His opponent Chael Sonnen had no such problems – he came under the 185 lb limit at 184.5 lbs.  Filho did attempt to make weight a second time but he came in at 189 – four pounds over.  Subsequently, their fight will go on as a non-title match and is now only scheduled for three rounds.

One has to wonder what frame of mind Filho is in as Paolo suffers from depression.  Filho has also been admitted into a rehabilitation clinic for chemical dependency earlier this year.  This stint in rehab actually forced the initial postponement of his rematch with Chael Sonnen.

Two other fighters had weight troubles. Featherweight title contender Mike Brown missed weight on his first attempt but made weight on his second attempt.  Brown’s title fight with Urijah Faber will go on as scheduled.  Rani Yahya came in a pound over his bantamweight limit but his opponent Yoshiro Maeda allowed Yahya to fight at 137 thus not forcing Yahya to cut more weight.

Here are the full weigh-in results:

  1. Rod says:

A champion not making weight is one of the most unprofessional things that could happen.

I guess the title doesn’t mean as much to him.

Looking at his body at the weighins you’d think he was fighting for a paycheque, not to defend his title.

  2. Rod, judging by the actual fight, it looks like you called it exactly right. Filho did not care about the fight. I wonder whether it was due to his bouts of depression or substance abuse or just a lack of motivation.
