GSP Has Fight Outside Of Octagon; Lesnar Impressive
Georges St-Pierre’s dominant performance on Saturday night, earned him an additional $60,000, as the UFC awarded both GSP and opponent Jon Fitch the ‘Fight Of The Night’ honours. While St-Pierre retained his welterweight title at UFC 87, his next battle will be outside of the Octagon, and it’s called ‘contract negotiations’.
GSP has only one fight left on his current contract, with negotiations switching to high gear, as GSP’s main sponsor ‘Affliction’ is waiting to pounce. With negotiations at a critical point, I spoke with St-Pierre’s manager and was told that there has been positive progress and it appears a deal with the UFC is iminent.
As for the pound for pound showdown against BJ Penn, I asked Dana White if it would happen in Montreal and he said ‘probably not’. Look for this bout to happen in Vegas, as part of the New Year’s Eve supercard, which will also feature the Interm Heavyweight Title bout between Antonio Nogueira and Frank Mir.
Speaking of heavyweights, Brock Lesnar made a believer out of me, but let’s not jump the gun here. When I saw him mount Heath Herring, I thought the fight was over, but Lesnar couldn’t capitalize. Brock is still on a learning curve, so with some more MMA training, look for the big man to add some finishing skills to his already exceptional positioning on the ground.
